Does any one know a good pilot book to cover the area from say Lowestoft to Berwick including Farne Islands/Holy Island.

Thanks if you can help.

Does the Royal Northumberland Yacht club not do a really decent pilot of this area?

Donald

Yes they do - its very good

If you want a close look at the Farnes there is an excellent guide showing all the safe transits to follow.

Take head protection if you go to the farnes in mating season, the birds do an excellent impression of a kamikaze pilot.

Yes quite right, All the RSPB people wear safety helmets.

And if you anchor there expect a noisy night from the seals - howl like wolves they do.

Thanks for the tip about hard hats? When exactly is the mating season? Wont my boom, main sheet guard wires spray hood, dodgers etc offer sufficient protection?

Tim

You only need a hat if you go ashore on the few places you are allowed to. However the yottie can navigate very close to most of the islands quite legally. The yottie may anchor in several places in the Inner Farnes group.

Your choice of anchorage will usually be downwind of an island. Dont worry, you will cease to notice the guano smell after 10 mins!!
