Pics from our summer cruise

A few fresh pics for those still folllowing. We left Turku with the plan to slowly head south to the outer archipelago and the open sea.

The plan was to stop at Nauvo for a few days but upon phoning them we learned that the marina is full and they can’t take any more bookings. We decided to go and have a look anyway but I had already made a plan b for a suitable anchorage. As we entered the small bay that hosts the marina, one of the marina operators drove up to us in a small rib and enquired whether we have a reservation. ‘No problem’ he then said and pointed us to the end of the main jetty that had maybe 2/3 of the boat’s length space left but still plenty for tying up safely. We couldn’t believe our luck as I later observed a non stopping queue of boats trying to get in. The place is the most popular in the archipelago.

Nauvo is a bit of a hotspot where the local celebrities like to visit and some of the nicer boats tend to drop in. The two Rivas (Aquariva and a Rivarama) were particularly nice and something you don’t see too often here tbh. The place has a well protected marina, a nice beach for the kids, couple of restaurants and enough small hut-boutiques to keep the shop-a-holics happy.

The speciality this time was the approaching thunder, that was to be expected after very hot and humid couple of days, but it made for very dramatic skies.

Clouds rolled in just on the half time of the world cup final and as the lightnings started striking I took the precautionary action of disconnecting the shore power. This of course meant that the tv died and as I didn’t want to start up the genny, I watched the remainder of the game on the iPad. Luckily the thunder wasn’t half as bad as the clouds suggested and what little there was was gone when the game ended.

On the morning of the third day, a sign had appeared on the dock by our bout saying that the place was reserved for the following day. I was a bit annoyed at first but to be fair, I hadn’t made the marina office aware of plans of staying longer (as we were leaving anyway) and secondly we were happy to have gotten such a nice spot for three nights without a reservation. I then phoned back to the guy in the rib to let him know that we appreciated his efforts in finding us a spot in the first place. I don’t believe back handers are the norm here as it felt like he doesn’t get too much positive feedback.

So we left for Korppoo…

You really made use of the thunder-storm and light effects SM, fantastic photography.

Don't worry there are some of us that are keenly following this thread, keep up the great work and enjoy the rest of the cruise.

+1 to all that, some of the pics are absolutely beautiful! :encouragement:

Btw, for some reason I had missed the previous (Jul 11th) update, where among other great pics you posted the one of the IT flagged Aquariva.
Needless to say, I'm glad to see that also at your latitudes there's someone proud of his/her "made in Italy" pride and joy.
But that made me curious, because I guess that the 5 registration number with a "T" in front of them mean that the boat is registered in Turku, right?
Anyhow, that surely isn't an IT registration numbering.
Bottom line, I'm wondering: is it allowed in Finland to fly an ensign not consistent with the boat registration?

Don't know why but I haven't read this thread before but I am glad I have now!
Wow! Some fantastic photographs of what looks to be a truly superb cruising ground. Many thanks for taking the time and trouble to post :)

I'm late to this thread too! What a great write-up Scubaman, and as ever your pictures are "pro". Thank you very much for taking the time to post it. I love the navionics chart and it makes me realise how unchallenging my cruising grounds are. Imagine navigating the area on your chart at night, before chart plotters and just with analogue radar.

The house with the Targa 62 (I think) moored outside is very nice indeed. How much does a place like that cost?

BTW, I'm pretty sure the blue hulled sunseeker manhattan 64 was an Essex Boatyards stock boat.. At least they had an identical one in their yard for 6 months or so (I went on it a few times; nice boat though not my cup of tea) and they sold it to Scandinavia in about 2011.

As far as I can make out, it is allowed for, say, an Italian owner to register the boat in Finland and still fly the IT flag. In fact, in this scenario, the owner would have to apply for a right to fly a Finnish flag.

The letter used to indicate the region in which the boat is registered but not so anymore, you can actually pick the letter when registering.

It might also be that the decision to fly IT flag was more of a statement from the owner... I doubt the flag etiquette on pleasure boats is enforced actively by the authorities.

The Riva's were really very nice...

Indeed I don't envy the lot of the sailors some hundred years back. But the divers of today have the rocks to thank for the countless wrecks to visit. The low salinity of the sea here means that a wreck can survive hundreds of years in pristine condition. Some years ago, a wreck from the 1840's was discovered with crates of intact champagne bottles in it. These were later auctioned and one bottle fetched 30 k€.

Re the villas, those places seldom come to the open market, there isn't one at the moment, but my guess would be 3 - 6 'bar' (€) for a renovated villa.

re the Manhattan, I'm curious, is there a special give away the enables you to identify it?

Lovely photos as ever :)

Would I be right in thinking that Turku is where many large ships get built? I think several of the Royal Caribbean ships have come from there.

Henry :)

Thanks H,

Jep, the STX Finland yard have build many cruise liners. The goverment is negotiating to buy the yard from the koreans together with a german partner to give the place a brighter future.

I'm afraid the correction is in order, N.
If that thing isn't a Man 64, someone did a fantastic job of copying one... :)

Why's the window so different? Does the M64 come in HT form? (as opposed to fly)

I won't comment on it further, enough thread drift by me, sorry.

No worries, I believe it belongs to a friend of a friend. My friend didn't know the details about where the boat has come from and didn't reach the owner so the final details will remain a mystery, but I'd also put my money on it being a Manhattan :)

The scenery in the inner parts of the archipelago sea, while pretty, is actually in many respects similar to that of our normal cruising grounds, so I was getting eager to get out to explore the outer islands. As the father-in-law was due to pay us a visit on the following day, we decided to make one more stop at Verkan, Korppoo ( https://goo.gl/maps/1o7Hb ) which is still accessible by car (albeit through a few ferry rides). The place was ok with good facilities and a restaurant offering ‘legendary’ ribs (which were good but nothing to write home about), but the place was a purpose built marina and lacked true archipelago ambience.

Every last buoy was in use by nightfall

In a search for such ambience we decided to head to Kökar ( https://goo.gl/maps/oKmUk ) which is a group of islands lying on the outer fringes of the archipelago.

One of the more remote houses with a pretty fantastic view to the sea

Not knowing what to expect we followed the very narrow and winding waterway between the small islands to find a pretty little fishing village (called Kallby) that really had the feeling that time had stopped.

Old boathouses line the waterfront and the only exception was the newish hotel hosted the visitors berths.

Kökar is a funny little place. It is an independent municipality with 246(?) inhabitants, a bank/post office, grocery store, doctor, etc. Everything seemed well looked after and some of the houses inland were brand new so there must be something for the people to do... ( :) )I really thought places like this didn’t exist anymore.

More traditional designs are still in use

IMG_2965_zpsab4b4991.jpg

Kökar has five marinas and we later decided to try a place called Sandvik which was highly recommended to us by fellow boaters. It was indeed nice, with a good pontoon and all the facilities one could wish for (yes, that includes a sauna).

On our way to Sandvik on the NW corner of the island. The weather was again lovely

We then spent some time pondering where to go next as there were three options: head back north to the inner islands (done that), head back east where we came from originally or head further west and go to Mariehamn, Åland. We thought that as we had come this far, we might as well go all the way so after the breakfast we cast off for the two hours cruise west.

..........."we cast off for the next two hour cruise west."

Stay tuned for the next episode!

Just when you think SM must run out of interesting places to visit......he finds a new one! :)

What is the tidal variation in that area of the Baltic SM, in one photo near an old jetty/wharf the rocks below don't look that far beneath the surface?

Keep 'em coming! :encouragement:

Is the mobo on the left Aida, or am I mistaken?
LOL, talk about being surrounded by raggies...
...did you manage to escape, eventually? :D

Your pics are really the best proof that your cruising grounds should be included in every boaters' bucket list.
It's nice to think that I'll be able to tick that off mine soon...! :)

Oh, that's not a secret, by all means.
Myself and swmbo very happily accepted the kind invitation of scubaman to join him when he will bring his boat back home at the end of August.
And we also took the opportunity to arrange a home exchange in Helsinki, spending a week there before joining SM, for good measure.
Therefore yes, I think you have reasons to be a bit jealous.... :D

Great pics scubaman. Whats the weather like in summer? Is it generally very settled 'continental' weather or is it variable like the UK? I have visited Kuopio a couple of times on business in July and the weather was amazingly sunny and warm. I wondered if that was normal
