I had one. Was pretty good. Waterproof, shockproof, dustproof, rubber armoured so basically you couldn't break it, but I lost it!

Not if they are in your pocket!! But a lanyard would be OK, it's not dropping them, it's falling in with them!

The 5140 is splash resistant - won't survive a swim in salt water. I don't know of any that will stand a salt water swim if that is what you are after - does not mean there aren't any, of course.

Most will survive a brief fresh water swim but not work until dried. Have heard of them going through washing machines and still able to make a call on them.

{Until recently ran a company with 35 marine surveyors, phones had a hard life so just used the cheapest phones we could buy and regarded them as disposable /forums/images/icons/frown.gif}

While you're there at LIBS, you could always ask H00's advice. I believe he knows all about waterproof phones.

Nokia do 3 phones 5100, 5140 and 5210 ,which are fairly tough, but they're only splashproof, all are rubberised cases. If you want fully waterproof and one that floats, suspect you will need to get a cover.
Managed to run over a 5210 with the car, didn't break it , only small crack on the cover

I think the problem with waterproof mobile phones is that not many get sold, and hence its not a very profitable line - hence much more profit in a nice bling phone like the <A target="_blank" HREF=http://direct.motorola.com/experience/GBR/ENG/v3/v3_homepage.asp?Country=GBR&language=ENG>Razr V3</A>

As for Motorola - Most of the phones are "flip" - and so don't even fit into a protective case. I've just had a search, and in the US they do make some "robust" phones to militry spec using the IDEN standard (not GSM) - these also benefit from haveing an "off air" walkie talkie ability to simular mobiles in range - example here:-

Boxit case

Have this as your "boat phone" - use a nice phone on dry land. When at sea you can divert your normal phone to it if you want.

As for Tariffs - the best would be to have an Orange phone on "Equivelent to Virgin" plan. If you dont make any calls then teh cost each month is £0 yep - zero - calls are something like 15ppm for the first 3 mins then 5ppm after that. If you already have an Orange phone this can be added as a second phone on teh same bill. The advantage of this over "prepay" is that it never needs to be topped up - and the "credit" never expires

Cheers
Jools

ps - Technicaly, you souldn't even use your mobile on the water because the networks licence is for a "Land Based Mobile Network"!!!!! - This doesn't stop the networks ensuring that coverage accross the Solent is 100% though!!!!

Orange Eqivalent to Virgin was withdrawn over a year ago. If you have it keep it, if you haven't, best go to Virgin.

Nokia 5140 is cheap enough to throw away if it's water resistance isn't quite resistant enough.

Almost there - <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.nokia.co.uk/nokia/0,8764,18769,00.html>Nokia 6250</A>

"Water resistance: Phone can survive an immersion for up to 1 minute in water up to 0.5 m deep; water may not be warmer than 50°C" - Just don't fall in too deep!

Check this out!

Hi Colin - not sure how much water you need to keep out, but this device is splash proof to IPX4.

OK - context:- IPX4 is proofed against splashes in outdoor use (inc. boats). IPX5 will withstand low pressure hose wetting. IPX7 will withstand immersion in water to a depth of 1M for a limited period.

This little baby is stainless steel (with colouring) so its real tough and incorporates a GPS receiver with good screen, and has an emergency facility that will dial a pre-set number giving your location anywhere in the world. It's dual band (UK/USA or UK/Europe) and comes with a host of features that cannot be listed here. It can be fitted with maps and charts and you can download a full product spec in pdf from the site I have given below.

No - its not a brick, its the same size as a Nokia 6110. Its the Esc model.
