No one will be more pleased than myself on the Chandlers release - but I do not think this should be achieved by the paying of a ransom which will increase the incidence of piracy for other sailors following in the Chandlers wake. So no, I won't be signing the petition but this doesn't mean I don't feel deep concern for the Chandlers and I hope they gain their freedom soon.

Cheers, Brian.

Very succinctly worded, I tend to agree with you although there are a lot of different opinions on this forum, will be interesting to keep an eye on the .Gov petition website numbers in days to come to see how the rest of the country view it.

The most worrying thing about this whole episode is the possibility that some at least of the pirates will see yachts as easy money, and we will have pirate boats sitting outside all the harbours used by yachts in the general area

Those of you who have seen my posts on this subject before will not be surprised to hear that I've signed. I don't know why I bothered though - these petitions are an utter waste of time. Has the government ever acted on one?

I see Lord Voldemort has signed it as well - always a good sign

Absolutely spot on.

Ransoms are already paid and pirates are kidnapping right now. The Government should pay up, or they should allow others to pay up and retrieve the Chandlers. I do not think it makes an iota of difference to the pirates strategy and how they think whether they get paid or not wrt the Chandlers. Their current formula works.

As what to do when the Chandlers are released, I would like to see my Government authorise the navy to engage anyone suspected in Piracy, then via United Nations try and sort this out.

I hope the Chandlers are released without payment, but I doubt it.

This succinctly encapsulates my thoughts on the subject

We couldn't find any petition with a reference like "Pay-Ransom". Please try the following:

* If you typed in the location, check it carefully and try typing it again.
* Look for the petition on the list of all petitions.

I cant access the petition. I can search for it and find it listed as "active" but it wont open. It comes up with reference along the lines of "cant find a petition with pay-ransom". I have not used those words to search the site.

Stupid Government.

It certainly worked earlier, perhaps its touched a raw nerve with Gordon!!

If it was my family being held I would be out there with a bag of fivers in a heartbeat, so under the circumstances I find it hard to agree with the "Don't pay, you will encourage them" stance.

Having said that, I would much rather we used the military to sort these things out. If we can spend billions in a foreign country supporting governments who may or may not help us to stop people who may or may not do something nasty to us in the future, then surely we could spend government money/resources to rescue our own people.

On the other hand perhaps they shouldn't have been their in the first place. It's a bit like smokers getting free lung-cancer treatment on the NHS.

Am I confused or what?!!!!!

They were a very long way from the recognised danger zone off the Horn of Africa. They presumably didn't know that the pirates had built on their successes to and around the Seychelles.

I heard on Jeremy Vine today that the Royal Navy urged them not to proceed.
There are so many conflicting stories flying around that it's hard to make any sort of opinion.

I feel very sorry for them, however, I absolutely detest the idea of giving in to the pirates. So I won't be signing the petition.

Well said that man. Paying a ransom or not in this case will make very little difference to anyone except the Chandlers.
