I was reading an old thread that referred to author Peter Heaton. my question is are they worth reading or have I just wasted £17 on Amazon?

I got " a yachtsmen's vade mecum", "a history of yachting" and "sailing" all for just under £17 with postage.

His companion to "Sailing" was "Cruising".

From memory he was Cmd. Peter Stuart-Heaton, RN.

I've always remembered his advice:

Don't wear a yachting cap in an 8 foot dinghy.
Don't wear a yachting cap in a 30 foot sailing yacht.
Don't wear a yachting cap on a 100 foot steam yacht.
Don't wear a yachting cap!

That's how I came across him. I was reading a thread from 2007 about Victorian yachting attire and found that quote.
I was looking for some inspiration for an event in September.

Sailing and Cruising are both excellent books, and well worth reading. he had a very modest, down-to-earth approach to sailing, epitomised by the famous white cap and blazer quote. All the more remarkable, since he was for many years secretary of the House of Lords Yacht Club.

The best place for second hand books is www.abebooks.co.uk - through which you access many thousands of booksellers in the UK and worldwide and can get terrific bargains. Including books by Heaton.

Have you tried any of Erroll Bruce's books? Terrific.
