After much discussion hereabouts have bought an inverter to run my microwave etc. I thought I would connect to batteries and run lead to my shore power connection point so that all 240 sockets are live, Then I thought my battery charger is connected to the same circuit, so I will be extracting power by my inverter and recharging via 240v , Have I just invented perpetual power or will I just disappear up my own....

There is serious question here tho should I disconnect battery charger whilst using inverter, will it harm my batteries?

Depends what sort of battery charger. If it is a proper marine one, then probably not. More likely to harm the inverter unless it is rated to 14.4 v

Surely no charger is clever enough to work out it is running on an inverter powered by its own battery?

You'll need to disconnect it when runnnig on inverter as every step in the cycle; battery - inverter - charger will loose power due to less than 100% efficiencies

You won't hurt anything by leaving it connected if you've forgotten, but you'll simply dishcage quicker
