Perkins Sabre fuel pump leak

Dear forum

I am in quite a fix with a perkins sabre M225Ti that I have in my fairly-new-to-me Mitchell 31. A leak has been identified (just before launch for the season!) coming from the body of the Bosch EPVE injection pump, which therefore needs to come off and be looked at.

The workshop manual talks about a special piston position probe PD.221 to set the crankshaft at 100° BTDC on the no 2 cylinder. My mechanic and the local perkins dealer have been unable to source this tool from their perkins contacts, and have not removed this pump from this engine before. They are cautious to go ahead without it.

I wonder if anyone has experience with this job, could advise where I can find the 'special tool' or a workaround, or perhaps a Perkins dealer who could help?

Thanks in advance

Jack

I think you can centre punch the pump body and timing housing. Put the crank into a known position, ie tdc, whip the pump of and refit in the same place. But dont take word for it.

Perhaps ask Golden Arrow Marine or PB Asher in Southampton.

Google Perkins Phaser or Perkins 1006 rather than M225ti.

Smashing boat and engine combo.

Try the Mitchell Facebook group.

I had a boat with twin 225 , i have just been looking at the manual i have and at a quick glance it mentions making your own tool , if i am reading right , do you have the perkins sabre manual and supplement

That wouldn't work - surely the pump drive will be moved in the fault finding/repair process.

Thanks all

Yes, I have the manual so will look for the part about making your own tool. Have since found out that the tool was discontinued in 2011. No one I've spoken to can source one.

I've also been in touch with Golden Arrow who are going to let me know whether they can come to me and do the job.

I could send the manual I have in case it’s different , if you want .

Thanks seastoke

The manual is the same one I have. I can see instructions about how to use the tool, but not how to make your own?

Post a pic of the leak , most of the 3.6 litre volvos have a similar VE pump , they leak on the advance piston cover which is an easy fix and can be done without pump removal .
where is the boat ?
