Perkins injection pump

I have decided to change my leaking injection pump for one I know is good from a doner engine. In the book it says the gasket or shim is responsible for the fuel timing.
Would a different pump require re timing or can I use the old shim?
Engine is a Perkins M30
It's either this or leave the old pump in and renew the O rings on each injection pipe which seems a lot more faffing about.

If you are not experienced, or not confident enough to re-set the injection timing, perhaps it would be best not to do it.

I am a long time small engine mechanic. I removed, sent for overhaul and replaced my injector pump last year. On my installation it was a big job.

The local Yanmar agent said "Nah-we dont do that. New donkey mate, twenty grand fitted!"

Not bloody likely.

It took nearly 34 hours on the spanners. Yanmar, through the importer Barrus, did not have a clue and told me to put my questions to a Bristol based agent who were really good.

Especially when I emailed them a diagram from the Yanmar manual that was confusing me.

It confused them too-it was so wrong! The Yanmar repair manuals are not very good!

My engine now has its poor hot starting, high idle and stalling issues fixed.

But it was a long drawn out-and expensive-gig.

It is fair to say, now I have done the job, should I need to do another, with the special tools I purchased and made, I could do it in 12 hours.

Even with my 76 year old body that gets less flexible by the month. :(

I don't think this job is as complicated as yours. The doner pump was 4 bolts and a R clip underneath, it then just lifted out. Hardest part was removing the injection pipes without damaging the fuel return pipe. took me around 30 minutes
I can't seem to get any mechanics to do it for me. It's either a really difficult job, or so small a job as not worth their while

I cannot say I know for the M30 ... but what I can say is that a similar comment is made for my 4-107 for timing etc.

I obtained a second pump and I fitted it exact same as old .. worked fine. But please don't blame me if it goes t's up !!

Reason for change was to have old pump serviced by local Volvo Truck Agents - the small thimble filter inside inlet was blocked solid and it needs pump removed to sort !

Reminds me - must search the barn for the pump !! Don't really need it .... but just in case !!

If the pump has been changed the timing must be checked and adjusted if necessary.

Mine and I think Refueler 4 107 injection timing is adjusted by rotating the injection pump in slotted holes. Mark the original position and fit it back in the same position.

Yours look quite different so no sure

My interest is from where id the pump leaking as from what I can see the injection pipes don't have O rings the seal like a compression fitting like mine

There are O rings inside the pump on each injector body, these harden over time and need to be changed. I just thought if I already had a decent doner pump I could swap them over. Then I read about the shims, even a thicker gasket can alter the timing apparently.

If you go with a secondhand pump from a donor engine of a similar age chances are it will start leaking as the o rings fail over time (unless it's already been rebuilt) and you'll have to sort out the timing. That looks very similar to the Zexel pump on my MD2040 and it cost me £165 + VAT to have it completely rebuilt / tested by these guys

Yes it has had the O rings replaced just before the engine seized. It's the same engine as the Volvo MD2030.
