Some of you may remember my posts a few weeks ago regarding mobile speed cameras. You will be glad to know I have received no letters yet so I assume I did not get done. However driving through Glasgow yesterday I definately got zapped. Here's how it went.

Get on M6 motorway in Lancashire set cruise control to 90mph.
Do not touch speed control for 180 miles.
Get to Glasgow and proceed on a dual carriageway.
See speed camera and instantly brake assuming I am in a 50mph zone.
Pass said camera at 45mph grinning smuggly that I have succesfully evaded any Dibble.
Sodding thing zaps me twice.
Assume it was a 30 or 40 zone.
Not so smug afterall.

The point is, when blatantly breaking the law I dont get done.
When attempting to stay within the legal limit, I do get sodding done.

Anyway the question is "how long do points stay on licence these days" incidentally, got six now

Re: Getting flashed

Flippinek, what is the country coming to eh? I too have been flashed several times and guess what? NOTHING! All that money spent on police, and cameras, and then they can't even be bothered to nick people! Another time I was chasing a motorbike down the new M6 toll road at whooshy speeds that allowed me to haul in his honda fireblade thing, eventually, altho the limiter didn't help and guess what? AGAIN no police prescence whatsoever, whereas really, I should've been nicked very badly indeed.

Anyway, yet again i will wave my magic wand and reckon you won't get done.

Also note that some of them go off if you whoosh up to them and tramp on the anchors when alongside, i think.

You were lucky you were'nt done by the kind rozzers of Dumfries and Galloway if you were doing 90mph on the M6/M74. I was done for 90mph on that road a few months ago by an unmarked C class with an on board Laser gun

Lets hope your right and nowt happens.

Yep I think I was kinda lucky but you see my point, it kinda makes you wonder weather to bother staying legal at all. You see as soon as I thought I was driving within the limit I get sodding zapped, yet hoofing it for 180m sod all dibble to be seen. I would not have minded as much if I had not seen the camera till too late, I then would have blamed myself for not spotting it.

I think they stay on your licence, for totting purposes, for 4 years from date of offence (afaik) . If you dont get letter within 14days of being zapped you have got off.

Agree with tcm. That M6 toll road is the biz, only place in UK you can sensibly nudge the limiter otherwise than at 3am. There seem to be zero police there. It used to be quiet, but is now getting busier alas. What amazes me is not the 450hp+ supercars, but the number of screaming fwd hot hatches (eg this last saturday, a P reg VW Corrado with loose body kit) doing 140+mph. Those cars shouldn't being going that fast

But i-o-m, 6 points on licence - you are almost dicing with death because a 96mph pull would get you 4 or 5 points, and a 100mph pull 6 points.

The other point about unofficial motorway speed limits is that they're different all over the country. Here in the South East particularly on the M25 (when its clear) and the M40, the average outside lane speed seems to be about 100mph with many cars cruising in excess of that figure. Up north and particularly in Scotland, Plod is less tolerant which is ironic 'coz there's less traffic up there so should theoretically be safer to speed

"how long do points stay on licence these days"

Me thinks you can have them removed from your licence after 3 years from the date of conviction but you have to declare them to your insurance company for 5.

I got flashed a week ago along the embankment, definitely only doing 30 when I got to the camera but had to do a "stoppy" to get the speed down just before it.
Now waiting to see what surprises Mr Postie brings.../forums/images/icons/frown.gif

Re: embankment

hm, i think the embankment ones are ok, cos not a safe seat for tony's lot perhaps, or maybe lots of floating voters.

A41 thru swiss cottage, tho, is safe tory, so soddem, and they do bring nasty points and fines.

Anyway, I will do another bit of wandwaving for KevB.

Embankment special note : on the way westwards, after the embankment proper, towards Tower Bridge, there's a tunnel, and no speed camera untill well out of the tunnel BUT sometimes the cops have a handheld speed camera and are hiding BEHIIND the speed camera. Whcih is a bit gittsh of them. The best way to handle this is to launch quickly off the lights but stop accelereating at 30mph, which will encourage some city wizzkid type to wham off from the lights and get nicked, and not you.

Yep, three years for points, acccording to a well-known (hereabouts) solicitor.

Re: embankment

Thanks for the wand waving. If it helps the camera that flashed me was just before the tunnel (heading west on upper thames street, just past southwark bridge) which is just before you get onto the embankment proper (north side of Thames)

Re: Anna-Marie AGAIN

ah well, i think that one is effective, and has caught the ex-au pair anna-marie, (of 345bis Rue Carnot, Aix en Provence CEDEX 64000) twice, before she inexplicably left our employment. Well, she left our employment, then came back, did another bit of speeding, then left once and for all, as far as i know. So maybe it was her?

The cameras can be set off by fast traffic going in the opposite direction, don't know how or why but it does happen alot, so hopefully that was the case.

Only time I got caught for speeding, drove through this town passed de-restricted sign into open country. Driving along trying to decide if I was on the right road, see this police car parked down the road, no worry, only doing 45 mph looking for road signs, and green fields all around. Nice police man stops me for speeding, pointing to these 6 lamp posts, all with 30 mph signs stuck on. It turns out that the bit of road, 50 yards long, that the copper was parked in was to be the entrance to a new housing estate at a future date, and as there are strret lights it's a 30 mph area, well 1/4 mile of road. A copper was sent down each day with a pad of speeding tickets, and had to stay till all had gone, as the firm near by that I was going to explained. Just wished thay had told me before, never looked at the ploice in the same light after that.

Definitive position is the points stay on your licence for four years but for totting up d/q only count for 3 years.

The transition from an de-restricted NSL limit to a "restricted road" limit (i.e. 30mph by virtue of streetlamps at intervals of not more than 200 yards) must be marked by 30mph signs on each side of the road. After that, there MUST NOT be repeaters. From what you describe, road could have been incorrectly marked therefore speed limit strictly unenforceable.

Never saw a 30 sign, was told by chap at firm that it was behind a bush, still got 3 points and a fine.
Think even less about them now.

Or at least be aware of what the limit should be, and have that right foot twitching over the brake pedal at the slightest hint of trouble.

Also, makes me chuckle that people get pulled over by "unmarked" cars. These aren't that hard to spot, bristling with radio equipment, extra mirrors, and driven by burly gentlemen with short haircuts and silver numbers on their shirt lapels. Also, they tend to stick to predictable makes. When was the last time you were pulled over by an unmarked Hyundai, Suzuki, Fiat, Alfa, Citroen, Bristol, Ferrari, Aston Martin, or TVR ? As opposed to Mondeo V6's, Vectra V6's, Volvo T5's, VW Bora V6, Merc C-class, BMW 3-series etc. etc. which are very commonly used.

It's about time I got done again anyway. The 3 points were 4 years old, so have paid the £19 for a shiny new one with no points. History suggests that this will trigger some points to be added within the next 6 months at best.
