<<<are not sufficient to cover maritime law>>>

Often said on this forum - but does anyone actually know which maritime law in the UK requires this in respect to pleasure vessels?

I'm no legal eagle but was intrigued because I believed and had been taught this to be a requirement. The only reference I came across was in MCA guidance which points to the SOLAS regs V/34 'Safe Navigation and avoidance of dangerous situations' which states that 'you should be familiar with any navigational dangers you may encounter during your boating trip'.

This was then expanded to state that this generally means checking an up to date chart and a current pilot book or almanac.

I'm sure that there are others who can illuminate further.

Hi Chris

I have posted in your thread on Scuttlebutt as I understand it to be with SOLAS V and its enactment in the UK - as far as I am aware the chart carriage requirements in that do not apply to normal pleasure vessels (in the particular section only the carriage of a radar reflector is required of normal pleasure vessels and that is echoed in the MCA's SOLAS V lpamphlet for pleasure vessels).

Contrary to much opinion expressed on here it seems that SOLAS vessels do not have to carry paper charts at all as long as suitable ECDIS and backup ECDIS are carried (IMO SOLAS V is very clear on that and I do not see anything in the UK enactment that contradicts it).

Maybe there is some other legislation somewhere specifically applying to pleasure vessels?

While some will know I do not live in the UK, my interest is genuine in that I am involved in the building of vessels that go into British flags.

Yes, I'll be interested to see what comes of this.

Regarding the ECDIS charts, I believe that these don't have much coverage from a yotty's point of view they concentrate on shipping lanes which most of try to avoid. Mirelle is the font of knowledge that I would expect a sensible answer from.

My understanding is that both official ENC and ARCS charts on an ECDIS are acceptable - so that means all of the UKHO portfolio of raster charts (and the official charts of many other nations) is ok.

Similarly, would be interested in Mirelle's input.

Now that's interesting, I beleive that ARCS weren't only ENCs which is what I meant in the earlier post. I hope that ARCS are acceptable because I've got loads of them!

With that interest then I can expand a bit - as I understand it the oceanic charts are likely to stay as ARCS with no ENC ones available for a very long time as no real benefit for oceanic having ENC due to the low level of detail so they are of low priority.

{When I say ARCS am actually loosely (incorrectly) referring to other official raster charts such as Maptech as well}.

Thanks, John. And with Brendan's post making reference to the SOLAS regs it looks as though we are covered in the event of a prang if we have UP-TO-DATE charts of the regions in which we cruise in whatever medium we choose. Clearly, if you go down the ARCS PC route you'd have to carry a backup to be taken seriously by that judge one always imagines in the worst case.

Re your input of 4/11/'04 :1614.
What type of software are you using? Expect to get ARCS Skipper folio plus software when I get to London Boat show In Jan. Little or no knowledge of using PC onboard.
