Patio Magic now in at Aldi

OH, the last time Ali had Patio Magic in, I looked at the concentration guide, and the dilution was 1:4, not the usual 1:9 for a working solution.

If it is full strength, their price is very favourable to customers.

Both Doff Path and Patio cleaner and Brintons Patio Magic contain the same concentration of benzalkonium chloride. ( 7.5 %)

The standard dilution rate for both is 1:4. Patio Magic suggest 1:9 for light growth.

Doff is in a 2 litre size. PM is in 2.5 litre size

Aldi's price for Doff P&P cleaner is £1.99 / 2 litres

Homebase price for PM is £10 / 2.5 litres ( 2 x 2.5l for £14 ), £18 / 5 litres ( 2 X 5 l for £22 ) ... but may well be less elsewhere

as well as polishing ( angle grinder ) tool about £40 from memory
Is it effective?
The polisher looks very similar to my Silverline polisher
They are sander / polishers NOT angle grinders
Decent quality polishing mops ( eg 3M are recommended )

Benzalkonium chloride is a very effective algaecide and fungicide ................ Brintons say that Patio Magic must not be used as a moss killer

If it is the same size as my Silverline it does the job but is relatively heavy. Some kind of line from the toe rail to support it helps

It might be me, but I've found Patio Magic to be not as long-lasting/effective as in the previous years I've used it. I always use a 1:4 solution - the last time (Autumn) I used it at 1:2 dilution.

Used to be OK to apply twice a year to keep the green away but it seems now every 4 months is more appropriate - especially Autumn through winter to Spring.

I'm going to try Wet & Forget and see how I get on - seemed pretty effective on my son's boat but don't know how long it will work for just yet.

So just to be clear I can use patio magic on my spray hood/teak without bleaching/damaging it? ....and the Aldi 1:4 stuff is the right stuff to use?

Use water to dilute, yes?

TIA

I actually spray it on undiluted straight onto our spray hood and cockpit tent. I prefer to do this on a dry wind less day and then leave it well alone. This will guaranteed 12 months of algae free spray hood, cockpit tent and sail cover. Rinsing or dilution just reduces the longevity of biocidic protection.
It also increases the risk of killing off sea trout and other fresh water fish in our dock. There is no risk of bleaching or destroying the stitching.
Wearing eye protection rubber gloves and a mask is optional but a good precaution.

Thanks TSB!

Have used PM in the past to remove little black spots from glassfibre decking on my MoBo.. @ 1:4.
Just brushed on and left to dry.
Very effective and lasts a season. We are however moored in a exposed open enviroment.
Purchased from whoever was cheapest at the time. Wickes.

+1 for the Doff version of PM from Aldi. Works very well indeed. In fact I used it on the sprayhood recently as per query above, and the sprayhood is now pristine.
Aware of the possible effect on sealife and I only use it in the boatyard during the winter. I treat all the running rigging with it too, spring and autumn.

At £1/ litre it's far far cheaper than PM from anywhere that I've found.

Not recommended at all. Patio Magic MSDS states quite clearly

"Health hazards The product is classified as irritating to skin and eyes. "

You are thinking of mixing ethanol (pure alcohol as in Origo stoves) , hydrogen peroxide, and glycerin but the ethanol must not have "denaturing" chemicals such as pyridine, methanol, denatonium (Bitrex ) added as these are poisonous and taste awful. Proportions are 830:42:15 BTW for DIY sanitiser.
