I have a model racing yacht (Yes, I know, I know!) that is need of painting, at the moment some bits of it are a nice metallic dark blue and other bits are, well, bright yellow. I assume that spraying it will achieve the best finish but what is the best stuff to use. Alternativly, is there anybody that is particualy good at doing this sort of stuff because I am bound to make a mess of it! I do want it to look good afterwards.
Thanks
Ross

I worked with a guy that mixed pure turps with the paint and spent days rubbing down with wet and dry and washing down the work before he started painting , the finish he got was amazing ! But it would take him 2 days to paint a door . He said it was how they used to paint cars in the olde days. Good luck . Jason .

As jason said, 90% of the finish is in the prep. For applying the paint the best way would be with an airbrush. They're available in most hobby/model shops for a few quid.

Have a look at this site for an air brush

when I was a little boy ( and I still am) I used to spray them with a spray can from the local car shop.

As you well know I have a 1 Metre too.

I did the rubbing down/filling/rubbing down and then gave it to a local car spray workshop. £25 and beautiful.

Air brush is good but you get more paint on with a brush so a better or more protective finish , saying that i tried the brush and turps method and its a nightmare , but done right it does look good .

...whereas you'll have your boat entirely re-modelled inside and out in 3 weekends including the spiral staircase and the net curtains. /forums/images/icons/cool.gif

I used marine gloss with a minature gloss roller (about 5 quid for 10 from b&q) on my trransom. Not quite the same quality as a spray gun, but it was done in minutes & looked better than a brush. A good rub down first & a nice day for drying gave me a finish that still looks good 2 years later. You can forget the metallic finish though.

That also reminds me dont use a b and q brush (if your going to use one) buy a good one like a purdy , about 20 quid a brush but worth it as you want the finish .

You must have a glass willy! 20 quid per Purdy. I can get you a set of three for that money!
