painting grp boats

I have some poor gelcoat repairs (previous owner!) and need some new repairs doing. Yard said would repair and then paint boat as hull is fading anyway. Not sure if this is the course I want to pursue - am I right in thinking that a painted grp boat gains good looks only in the short term and that it also loses value? let me know what you think

John. Have a look at some of the two pack long chain polymer marine paints available. They are very hard when dry and have an extremely high gloss finish, not cheap but they do last. At the risk of being sunk for the use of brand names in this forum. Ask your International Paints dealer for some information on Inter-spray 900.

Painted ours as a necessity (lifeboat orange before - now two shades of blue).

We used brushes - but think spray would have been better.

Used a two-pack by Jotul. Very happy with the result despite "brush strokes" which I think were probably more due to our technique ("get it finished and start sailing") rather than paint itself.

Ensured good "key" by rubbing down whole surface with sandpaper, then washed with fresh water then wiped with solvent (high as a kite at that stage!).

Paint seems as hard as nails - a fairly hefty contact with a pontoon corner caused a minor chip where the original colour can be seen (if you look for it) but "like on like" colours would probably not be noticed at all.

In our case - definitely increased rather than decreased value - but don't know about real yachts!

Best regards )
