Try a company called a. Bilbrough&co ltd down London. They are the managing insurance company for the fd&d and p&I insurance club world. Covered amoco cadiz, herald of free ent. And I know they used to cover the round the world race.

In terms of Ship Owners - it usually goes further than that .... to also cover against losses or effects to cargo or 'time / action' engaged in loading / discharge of cargo that are claimed against the vessel outside of Cargo Interests Insurance. Another example is Loss of Anchor ...

P&I for Ship Owners can be what is termed Umbrella Cover ... but often when P&I Investigator visits the ship - Owner is disappointed !!

We often are on board protecting our Clients interests when P&I attend ...

Back in the day, I worked indirectly for the P&I club, clearing hazardous chemicals from sunken vessels, and ensuring that no further pollution could occur.
Having worked mostly in Oil & Gas where every penny spent was grudgingly granted, to working in an industry where there was no visible budget, as the job had to be done, was 'refreshing'. The 'club' had total trust in the primary contractor, and their integrity and competence, something that an oil company wouldn't understand.

P&I engaged a well known Salvage Co. to refloat a Bulk Carrier .... 60,000 tons of Potash on board .....

I was on board protecting the Cargo Owners interests.

The Salvage Co guys on board were 'rude' - 'arrogant' - and made a complete arse of the job. The P&I Guy was totally out of his comfort zone.

We all boarded the vessel after motoring round to see how far she was aground ... I had all the loading data - drafts etc free floating .. we had the sounder running so we could estimate.
On board we had a 'conference' where the Salvage guys just refused to listen to anyone incl the Captain.
I had calculated that 15,000 tons would have ship free and there was actually an urgency as weather forecast indicated a high pressure on its way - which means in Baltic - water level drops ...
Salvage guys ignored mine and Captains suggestion and insisted on 5,000 ton ...
5KT was transferred to small lightering vessel .... engines started ... ship stayed stuck.
Lightering vessel back alongside .. another 5KT ... engines started .. ship stayed stuck.
Lightering vessel alongside again - another 5KT ... ship - you felt her 'pop' and move ...
Total 15KT ... funny that.

I advised Salvage Guys and P&I rep that I would be advising cargo Owners what had transpired ... and was asked not to. Sorry but we are not talking just an hour or so - we are talking an extra number of days and ships are not cheap !
Last I heard Salvage Co had some serious explaining to do to P&I and Ship Owners.

One of the ways Sanctions are hitting shipping industry - is to remove certain shipping co's from eligibility for P&I cover ... also for Cargo Interests to not get Insurance against losses.
This has led to various actions by sanctioned parties to create alternative cover.

Basically a ship without P&I is just a floating hulk. No-one will charter it unless of dubious .......... lets leave it there !
