Then read this if you are really sick of the nanny state etc.

Lots of people over 25 should be dead. To the survivors...

According to today's regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids in the 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's probably shouldn't have survived.

Our baby cribs were covered with bright coloured lead-based paint. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets, and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets. (Not to mention the risks we took hitchhiking.)

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a ute on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle. Horrors! We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle, and no one actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, bread and butter, and drank soft drink with sugar in it, but we were never overweight because we were always outside playing..

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the street lights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. No mobile phones. Unthinkable.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then rode down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Play stations, Nintendo 64, X-Boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, video tape movies, surround sound, personal mobile phones, personal computers, or Internet chat rooms.

We had friends! We went outside and found them.

We fell out of trees, got cut and broke bones and teeth, and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and ate worms, and although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes, nor did the worms live inside us forever.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's home and knocked on the door, or rang the bell or just walked in and talked to them.

Local football teams had tryouts and not everyone made the team.

Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment.

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law. Imagine that!

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers and problem solvers and inventors, ever.

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.

And you're one of them!

Congratulations. You who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before lawyers and governments regulated our lives, for our own good.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors?

Hi Colin
Guess we should all be brown bread by now!!!, just goes to show that we're a lot tougher and durable than the namby pamby don't get dirty brigade of todays, youngsters, I reckon in another 20yrs time the quacks will be advocating the "old " ways to try and build up natural immunity, because by then everything will have become so sterile, the pills won't work!!!!

IMHO

The medics in Sweden are already saying, kids dont eat enough dirt and there natural immunity suffers. I have sailed with mercans, that get sick drinking local caribbean water, where brits or the locals dont!! Obesity in the UK and other western countries kids is rising rapidly, because they dont get out of the house, playing with computers etc. They dont mix with other kids apart from on the internet or school, they live in a world of virtual reality, not the real world, it`s frightening and sad. Most antibiotics already dont work, because of over prescribing them, it`s a ridiculous situation, but how do we stop it now, we can`t go back, it`s too late. We are a dying breed. Humans I mean! This may sound alarmist, but think about it.

Reading all that made me feel quite nostalgic, and I was beginning to think I'd like to live it all over again, glad I did 60 years ago - thanks Colin.

Great memories. I did everything except the eating worms bit.
The odd time I switch off the tele, Play station, Computer etc. The house goes quiet and guess what - The kids go ot into the garden and play. Tactics I highly recomend especially with four super kids like ours.. Sunday is a good day for this but only of course when we cannot get to 'Obsession'.

Yes, but...

...newer generation could argue that the world they're living in is the result of our ideas.
See, we didn't have satellite TVs and mobiles, but we did invent them.
A side effect of felling out of trees maybe...
Oh well, who cares, nobody's perfect !

Re: Yes, but...

"They [Young People] have exalted notions, because they have not been humbled by life or learned its necessary limitations; moreover, their hopeful disposition makes them think themselves equal to great things -- and that means having exalted notions. They would always rather do noble deeds than useful ones: Their lives are regulated more by moral feeling than by reasoning -- all their mistakes are in the direction of doing things excessively and vehemently. They overdo everything -- they love too much, hate too much, and the same with everything else." - Aristotle.

Think people have been moaning about 'the youth of today' for some time, Fortunately, they ignore it. :)

If my sister (or anyone else for that matter) made me eat worms I too would become a veggie.
Did all the other stuff and more.
