Outdrive

Since placing my Fletcher sports cruisier on a swing moring I have noticed a large amount of growth on the leg of the outdrive. Apart from scrubbing away the weed and barnacles is there any other method of prevention?

I am know having to crusie at 3,300 rpm, at the start of the season I was cruising at 3,000 rpm.

we used veridian which is a clear antifoul for the outdrives, we had new legs and didnt want to paint them with a colour.

It is a two part antifoul and it stays sort of softish and does work but costs about 50 quid and will do two outdrives.

we did do them again recently where it had come off a bit and so next time we will probably just use a regular antifoul.

Great thing about O/D and o/B legs is you are still allowed to use TBT on them, you can still get it from some manufacturers in small tins. DO NOT use any Cuprus based antifoul near an outdrive, and that includes leaving a 1" - 2" gap between your hull antifoul and the outdrive as this can lead to corrosion issues with the alluminium.

Mine were done with Waterline which I think is Blakes and although it's not moved since they've remained weed free, unlike the rest of it!
Also it's a sensible price unlike some, one was about £ 60 for a small pack!!!

Couldn't you protect them whilst away from the boat with a big plastic bag? Liftem up, woosh with wd40, put the bag on and tie it up then puttit down. Or is this a really stupid idea?

I don't know if it would work or not but a couple of weeks ago I bought a heavy duty rubble sack in order to try this out next week. Will report later in the season. What's with the woosh with WD40 ?

pah, fancy not knowing this. Anybody with half a brain knows that mechanical things need spraying with an aerosol called WD40. However, those with a complete brain know that this does not actually fix things, but does displace the water a bit so sort of keeps rust at bay and makes you look very mekky.
