Orca attack

Blimey, the Captain has a big hill to climb with his "Slaughter an Orca" campaign - campaign logo, an orca with a harpoon in it on a blood stained seascape (the logo with an exploded orca and the captains preferred catch phrase "Burst 'em" was deemed even less attractive)

On one side, Spanish Law, Portuguese law, EU law, International Law, the CA, the RYA and just about every conservation organisation and on the other side .......

Authorities are currently evaluating and testing the use of firecracker like devices for use as an orca deterrent device. So they do recognise the problem and becoming more active in solving it.
Will they ban fishing as well in the whole of Biscay, West coast of Iberia and the Straits, not to mention Morrocco?
 
I can't comment about fishermen however those big steel trawlers taking to much fish are not a good thing. So maybe they should be banned in the area.

I understand your thoughts but those trawlers catch fish that feed the people. Its a difficult one to crack. Whatever they do, they affect and upset someone
 
The Med has been overfishing to death, feeding people now doesn't help in the future when stocks totally collapse.
So nature take what mankind wants now is not sustainable.

The attacks would be stopped with a limited cull. Stocks would not be harmed, the Japanese would enjoy a few luxury fish suppers and the threat to human life and property would disappear.

There we go.

Here in Spain, all the drains get sprayed a few times each year to keep the roaches and mosquitoes under control.

Impressive that you know that a limited cull would stop the behaviour resurfacing - but, hey, if you kill enough orcas....!

Do the Japanese eat orcas? I didn't think they did. I very much doubt that any whale killed in European waters would be consumed anywhere - and even the Japanese hardly eat whale meat.

Obviously, the threat to orca life would rather definitely appear under your "plan"!

Luckily, they are heavily protected, so a cull is extremely unlikely.

Doesn't stop you trying to dictate to the people of Spain, Portugal, Morocco and the UK how to conduct their lives in the Bay of Cadiz and the Gibraltar Straits though. Your nor a local, so why do you comment ? :rolleyes:
 
The rogues don't try and eat keels, it seems. So how long will people put up with their boats and lives being wrecked before yachts start fitting steel rudders?

Same in places like Antigua and Guadaloupe. The Surgeon General who saved so many workers lives when the US took over building the Panamma Canal attacked the areas where the females lay their eggs, highly successfully.

I've been reading this morning about an invasive species of fish wrecking Thailands ecology. So far, no fish huggers protesting.

I was mocking your pronouncements on Australia if you must know! I've been around 70nm from an orca attack site this year and you're, what, 10,000 (conventional) miles from Sydney!😀

In reality, everyone is entitled to their opinion on such matters and, I'm pleased to say, at the moment, any organisation that matters agrees with me. I would say that the whole ecosystem is connected and orcas, of course, can range far and wide. I wonder who's been closer to an attack site this sailing season, you or me (and, in my case, in a rather small sailing boat)? My "orca count" this year is 2 individuals, what's yours?

You really seem to be getting choleric over this issue, I commend the ignore function to give you the calming experience of merely having your own opinions reflected back at you.

How's your "burst an orca" campaign going? Do you go around with collecting tins or do you focus more on the corporate sector (This dead orca sponsored by Los Pollos Hermanos! Hmm, that strapline might need some work 😊)

Your definition of choleric is poles apart from mine. It's like me asking you why you are getting hysterical over something that doesn't concern you.......

The last of my many scores of transits through the Straits was in January. I delivered a Lagoon catamaran from Estepona to Lanzarote.

If you can find an old one knocking about, try a copy of the Straits Sailing Handbook. My oppo designed it. I did the annual updates and Mrs. S did the publishing bit. You should be able to understand the area a bit better with all the information it contains.
 
Get it into your heads a Cull is not going to happen.
However campaign all you like but don't complain when sailing is banned.
