Thanks. It seems so. I tried to buy some in the UK just now. I discovered they are banned! We had so much fun with them as kids.
I keep pointing out you can buy shotgun blanks on amazon. They are essentially like bangers, rigged in a holder also for sale on amazon that is activated with a trip line, for scaring poachers. Etc. Dip in wax. Any use you make of this information is up to you of course but they are perfectly legal to own in the uk.

Looks like it would work. There might be a bit of a risk. I wouldn’t want to be charged with illegal possession of a weapon by some foreign plod that has a sense of humour failure.

should be easy to check the law on blank ammunition. Its just a banger essentially to make a small sonic boom in the water. The orcas aren't far away and there's no reason to think they won't be a threat around the UK some time soon. I had an encounter with one years ago not far off the suffolk coast on the way back from Ijmuiden

Huge win for Brexit as first bluefin tuna caught in 70 years sells for £2,000 and the Orcas won’t be far behind. Could make sailing in the Solent much more exciting. Nine feet long but weighing only 30lbs, sounds rather light and bought for £2,000, will make for a very expensive dish, even in London. Think I will stick to tins of atun.‼️
It would have to be an eel to be 30lb at that length. Like you I suspect the article got it's facts wrong. Maybe 300lbs ?

Don't think they were shooting at them. It appeared to be firecrackers. The shooting bit came from the press and conservationists who were ramping up the rhetoric.
That makes more sense. Still not the smartest idea, given the laws about disturbace.
They could at least have quietly dropped them over the side away from the tripboat :)

Just been told (word of mouth) that the crew who were arrested for "shooting" (actually firecrackers) at orca down in the straits have all been released without charge, free to go. Can't find anything in the press yet. Rational behind release with no prosecution is not released yet. This came from a friend who saw it on the spanish news channel.

I cannot wade through 96 pages -

Has a team of specialist researchers been assigned to this?

Many spend a lot of time searching for killer whales.

Here they have a location.
They could send a team and conduct a lot of research with armoured vessels, could they not?

Tagging, etc?

Some of the problem orcas are already tagged and their position reported over the internet. The sites also show higher risk areas where attacks have been occuring. Start by looking here and enrol in the Telegram groups.

Some people are trying to take some ( economical....and financial...)benefits from our problems with orcas in Galicia, Portugal, and south coast Spain . Websites, flags, telegrams censored or controlled groups, like if we should be in a fun club, fund raising to "buy me a beer" , there are no limits today...beware,beware.
we have enough with stupid journalists wishing to see orcas distroying " rich " boat owners and promoting orcas "revenge" like if we should be guilty to sail gently alongside these coasts, enjoy portuguese or spanish hospitality and let some euros or pounds everywhere we stop in boatyards, restaurants, shipchandlers etc
