Hi, I am brand new to this forum and fairly new to boating, but I have been playing around with engines for years. I have previously owned and maintained an Evinrude / Tohatsu 6hp. I recently bought an Orca 8hp single cylinder outboard and will be maintaining it myself. I bought it second hand from the original owner after a few hours of usage and am currently performing the initial service. I have the owner's manual but Boatworld (the UK importers) have confirmed that no service or workshop manual exists. I have a few specific questions but I am happy to post my experience with the engine here and help out if others have issues or queries.
My initial observations:
  • The (6) bolts on the drive shaft housing, plus the two holding the springs for the tilt mechanism and the resistance adjustment spring for motor alignment were all difficult to remove (the latter was seized). There was a white powdery substance in the threads - it could have been threadlock but more likely it was corrosion of the aluminium. I removed the all bolts below the waterline and in the splash zone, cleaned up the internal and external threads and re-built with plenty of grease. I torqued to 5.6 Nm, which is a typical value for a lubricated M6 bolt in aluminium. I'm glad I didn't leave it any longer before tackling these bolts - one to keep an eye on.
  • The owner's manual specifies 0.6 litres of engine oil. That got it to the lower mark on the dipstick, It required around 0.85 litres to reach the upper mark.
  • The gear lever seems prone to coming loose. It is held in place by a fairly large M8 allen bolt. I'm going to secure it with Loctite activator and blue threadlock.
  • Boatworld recommends impeller replacement at the initial service and includes a new impeller in the initial service kit, supplied with a new engine. However, the official service schedule requires inspection after 1 year / 100 hours and replacement after 3 years / 300 hours.
My initial questions:
  • I have seen people imply the Orca engines are clones of Yamahas. Does this apply to the Orca single cylinder 8hp and if so, does anyone know the relevant Yamaha model number?
  • Has anyone performed an impeller replacement? Any feedback on how easy / difficult it is to do?
Thanks in advance. Let me know if you have other experience or queries I might be able to help with.

Yes it's a clone of the Yamaha.

My brother had carb issues so bought a yammy one to replace.

Air getting into the fuel lines can cause endless problems if using with the external tank.

I think there is a boat world FB group where more answers are available.

PS I'll ask my brother if he has any words he can add....
