Here is one lucky man in a rubber dinghy in Southampton Water when a container ship approached.

I gather you can be trained to survive that immersion. But I don't know how long it takes to revert to normal if the practice is not maintained...From the tiny bow wave, the ship was going pretty slowly. OK the man swam for it; it worked, and I have no intention to criticise as I wasn't there and please God, never will be, but I wonder if, with the advancing years of many here, we wouldn't be at more risk of a heart attack suddenly entering water at 8-9 C than we would bouncing along the side of the ship.
Having said that, a friend went swimming at Calshot the other day, but she's mad, so it doesn't count
He was trying to start his engine.
I wish the video had kept going so we could see what happened to the dinghy. From the tiny bow wave, the ship was going pretty slowly. Assuming that he had some!He might have been better off applying his attention to his oars.
No way the bridge team would see him.Man in dinghy in near miss with Southampton-bound container ship
The Daily Mail said he was a reveller...

Indeed. I'm impressed that the Daily Mail could tell the ship was outbound unlike the BBC...No way the bridge team would see him.

It would be nice to know if the ship's wake would have pushed you away with a human in the inflatable wouldn't it. At various states of load, the container ship's prop is exposed which would have been terrifying. Only if you lived to tell the tale. I think I would need a considerable amount of therapy.I wish the video had kept going so we could see what happened to the dinghy.
He got admitted to hospital with "shock"... New underpants perhaps! It would be nice to know if the ship's wake would have pushed you away with a human in the inflatable wouldn't it. Didn't he do well though .
