One lucky man in rubber dinghy in the path of a container ship

Yes amazing what that small dinghy with a dodgy outboard was doing in Soton water in first place -maybe he left his jetski behind as that’s what you usually see them doing around there .

From the tiny bow wave, the ship was going pretty slowly. OK the man swam for it; it worked, and I have no intention to criticise as I wasn't there and please God, never will be, but I wonder if, with the advancing years of many here, we wouldn't be at more risk of a heart attack suddenly entering water at 8-9 C than we would bouncing along the side of the ship.

Having said that, a friend went swimming at Calshot the other day, but she's mad, so it doesn't count :)

I gather you can be trained to survive that immersion. But I don't know how long it takes to revert to normal if the practice is not maintained...

I see the safety boat stood well off. I'm getting worried about Solent sailors and the interpretation of the COLREGS and LNTMs. Is there a game of chicken being played? First a racing yacht now a dingy, it will be a SUP next.

I wish the video had kept going so we could see what happened to the dinghy.

Man in dinghy in near miss with Southampton-bound container ship

The Daily Mail said he was a reveller...

I wonder what happened to the escort boat that runs along in front? Probably didn't believe that the dinghy off to one side when they went through would be daft enough to play chicken.

It would be nice to know if the ship's wake would have pushed you away with a human in the inflatable wouldn't it. At various states of load, the container ship's prop is exposed which would have been terrifying. Only if you lived to tell the tale. I think I would need a considerable amount of therapy.

Didn't he do well though .
