Old sailor needs a new fangled qualification

Re: price?

The £130 was just a guesstimate based on some of the prices mentioned by other posters. I thought I might try Crouch school of sailing.

Re: price?

Twister Ken

thanks for your kind comments. Strange, but I have always had wooden boats and have always liked Adnams. For years we went on family summer holidays at Southwold to sail and, er um, be near the brewery. When they start mashing at about 0930 and the smell wafts over the town, it really is desperately difficult for a beer enthusiast to resist the urge to stroll off to the nearest pub and join the queue for opening time.

I must say, however, that when I get too old for scraping and caulking and all these other back-wrecking tasks associated with wooden boats, I would rather like a Hunter Mystery, which has been getting rave reviews in the mags.

I suppose that if I go GRP I might have to change beer to something trendy like Becks or Rolling Stone, you known, that stuff that has to be drunk straight from the bottle, usually with a slice of lemon rammed down the neck. (How on earth did I ramble on to this nonsense. Need to go sailing again, preferably to Adnams country for a quick pint to clear a befuddled brain)

And what's all this got to do with an ICC? Sorry, won't do it again.

You clearly spend too much time in the Solent

Fish & chips and Adnams on a winters day in Southwold... heaven

Who\'s Fred Drift?

It doesn't matter that Adnams has nothing to do with the ICC (or maybe it does!) It's all part of a long tradition around here known as Thread Drift.

If you do get a Mystery 35, can I have a go please? Will bring along a crate of something worthy to compare with Southwold's best.

Mmmm. maybe, but there are compensations. I live within smelling distance of the centre of London; Fuller Smith and Turner's Griffin Brewery.

Couldn't agree more, fond memories!

Re: price?

You might not get a response from Crouch Sailing School for a couple of days as he's away at the moment. Usual cost is about £70 I think.

I asked a few charter companies this morning, in Palma though.

The picture shows two different "philosophies" :

-The big ones (Moorings, Sunsail, etc.) are reluctant to answer the question clearly, and when pushed, say, they request "Day skipper", ... just to look O.K. if the boat (and its skipper) are checked by the Guardia Civil.
In my opinion, they probably will accept anything different, but are not allowed to say so, ... or will cash the reservation money, and then impose a skipper upon you!

- The small ones, most of them spaniards renting one or two boats. All of them told me every body knows there is no compulsory "permit" in G.B., and they are absolutely happy with a membership card of a sailing club.

Most of them will ask you to have a short sail with them to assert your capacity.

Of course, the Guardia Civil is getting more and more active at checking boats.

... And what would happen if you have an incident involving their insurance company?

Hope this helps.

Feel free to drop me a PM if you have more questions

Thanks very much for checking the situation in Palma.

But, blimey, it is all getting a bit serious with ICCs, permits, checks by the Civil Garda, worries about insurance. All I want to do is take a few relatives for a day trip round the coast.

Might be best just to sit around the pool and get bored.

I'm off sailing for a few days now to ponder the situation over a few pints of Adnams.

Will look back here on Friday night. Thanks for all your advice so far

regards

OG

I am Belgian, and I have rented sailboats both in Costa Brava & Menorca with the Belgian certificate (Algemene stuurbrevet) at the time I didn't have the Yachtman. Even if they don't understand a single word in Dutch, they didn't have any problem. I think they only mind in the Euro's that are coming in.
In Belgium, there is no need of any kind of certificate for sea navigation, so this certificate is basically for inner waters (this legislation is going to change, in principle next year).
So I don't think you should have much problems in renting a boat.
You can always look at some renting companies and give them a call, explaining the situation, and asking if there is any problem.
Fair winds,
Miquel.

Hello Miquel

sorry I have taken so long to reply..but my ancient old computer gave up the ghost and stopped working.

I will take your advice and contact a couple of charter firms. However, another member of this forum has e-mailed me to say that most of the boats will be fully booked for August because sailing is so popular at Puerto Pollensa.

I think I might have to settle for a largish dinghy or a Hobie Cat and I understand that I will not need an ICC for them.

Thanks for all your advice

Will get an ICC later in the season.
