Hi I have just discovered my 'new' engine doesn't have a sump plug. The only way to get the old oil out is suck it out. I have the pump and some plastic pipe. My question is does the suction pipe go inside the dipstick pipe or over the outside Thanks.

If its a Bukh engine make sure the oil is nice and warm, and don't forget to remove the filler nut at the top, otherwise it creates a vacuum. The pipe will need to go inside the pipe until it touches the bottom.

I have no experience of changing oil on that engine but there is a google forum that shows the hex headed plug that Tranona mentions..

and within that thread there is a link to a photo courtesy of the Catalina Association showing plug B into which you can put a threaded barbed insert onto which you can use a suction tube.

You may well find alongside the dipstick tube a hex headed plug in the crankcase which you can remove an insert your tube. The Pela works by creating a vacuum and the tube needs to be submerged in the oil - so down the tube not over it if you use the dipstick entry.
It looks like the original hex headed plug has been replaced with a flat plate over the hole. Perhaps I could take this off and suck it out with the bigger pipe.

I found that a piece of 8mm copper plumbing pipe fitted nicely into the end of the plastic tube on my vacuum extractor pump And would fit easily down the dipstick tube on the engine.
as people said above, the oil needs to be warm to flow easily through the small diameter tubing.

BTW... if that rubber cap has never been removed, it will likely be over painted in the Volvo green colour.

New, more rubbery/flexible caps are easily available.

Someone on the Cruisers forum suggested that being the same as the MD2030, it could have the suction tube already there... I'm guessing yours didn't have this rubber cap either?

I use this capped tube on the MD2040 and place the suction tube tightly over it and never into it..
It looks like the pipe has been removed and a blanking plate fitted over the hole for some reason.

Commonly in Denmark. Dizzy Too, most of the time.

Check the level before draining, check the volume taken out. Fill the same amount + ½ lite if changing the filter.

It is common (due to engine fitment and/if down-angled gearbox) that the volume to replace doesn't match the volume stated in the manual.

Not a problem in any way, just keep it between the marks on the stick (after having started it to ensure the filter is filled).

Just about to crack on with the oil change through the dipstick, I removed the old oil filter and happened to notice a drain plug at the back of the sump pan... so I think I will drain the oil out via this. Thanks for all replies
