oil and filter quality

Re: Oils and Filters.....

Here in the States....I have been using Shell "Rotella T" along with Fram or NAPA filters. Rotella T is the same oil that is used in large engined semi's or lorries that use turbo-diesels. Its actually hard to find diesel grade oil that isn't made for turbos.....and since I have a Perkins 4-108....its hard to buy "Perkins filters" we use Fram usually. Thus far there has been no problem using the multi-grade 15W-40W but I think that I will probably use straight 30W on the net oil change since I'm not sure Florida temperatures really warrant the use of multi-viscosities in a sailboat's engine.

Merry Christmas to you all!!

Reality is the cause of all stress!!

dc 3 and soyo angola

was the new year crew change for the sedco 135g, we brought them in by supply boat, trucked them in to the air strip and put them on a dakota (yes thats right DC3)
id arranged for the goony bird to come up night before and take off early in the a.m for luanda. all jocks but we were pretty sure we could get them on UTA to jockland in time for hogmonay.

any way cold damp dawn, mosture everywhere, got them loaded but port engine splutter splutter, pork pilot says he would give it a go, goes to the end of the runway and does his run up, mag check splutter splutter, up and down up and down, splutter gets better as she starts to warm up, off they go, still splutter but she came past us with the tail wheel up and then that off beat woom woom as she got into her stride, i swear to this day that he lifted the wheels just to get her airborne, the jocks got home for hogmonay !!

Beat you to it, my friend. Arrived in 1965, 5 years in Luanda building the cement factory, plus a year down in Sá da Bandeira, building mine installations at Cassinga, plus a railway down to the port of Mocamedes. But that was in the good old days, when you could drive all over the country, except up in the N, where the war raged. Ah well!!!

There are two important characteristics to get right:

SAE Rating: This is a measure of the viscosity (how thick/thin the oil is) You must follow your engine manufacturer's recommendation on this. Your handbook may well give you a figure for a single grade oil to use in winter, a different single grade oil to use in summer and a multi-grade oil you can use all year round. Most of the diesel engines I have come across seem to use SAE 15W40. That means it behaves like SAE15 when cold (thin) and SAE40 when hot (thick) So how does it manage to behave like a thicker oil when it gets hot when we all know oil gets thinner when it gets hot? Clever bods these oil boffins. Multigrade oil oils contain long chain molecules which change their properties as the oil changes temperature and produce the desired effect.

API (American) or ACEA (European) Rating. These ratings cover many aspects of the oil's chemistry and can be thought of as 'packages of additives'. The API ratings are the most commonly used and are pretty well always quoted on the can so I will talk further about them:

API ratings for diesel engines all start with a 'C'. This stands for Compression. You must, must, must always use a 'C' rated oil for a diesel engine as they contain detergents and other chemicals to deal with the specific combustion products of diesel fuel. The next letter denotes the level of sophistication of the remaining package of additives. Each time there is a significant advance in technology a new letter is allocated. Early letters have now disappeared altogether. Thus:

CD is about the oldest rating still found on sale. The handbooks of many older engines recommend CD rated oil simply because it was the best available when the engine was designed.

CF is quite common and is often called High Performance Diesel Oil or something similar.

CF-4 is often called Super High Performance Diesel and is the minimum standard I look for for my Mercedes OM636

Putting all these together, Shell Rimula can be obtained in various grades but the most common is SAE 15W40 CF-4. Go for it!
