The massive line of wrecks along the revetment wall on the charts would put me off cutting thro the Rock Channel. Plus I used to paddle across the channel at low water as a kid. But I suppose you're OK if you just pull the centreboard up.

Oh you don't want to worry about those! ;)

We draw 2 1/2 feet board up but in shallow water I leave a little wound down as an early warning system! Having sailed on the SE coast for a while I got used to the shallow stuff!

Sand & mud is no trheat, but the revetment piles are a bit less forgiving & the gap is not bouyed is it?

ok I am a hillbilly sheep farming above Lumb- is that scrote ville i dont know ?.Anyway I have already beneffitted from advice from NW notably Searush and also Kawasaki who kindly sent me a back copy of the MBM which i thought was above the call and I greately appreciated that.

As for the much quoted fun box then yes on board BUT to answer Searush I am in Liverpool Marina so perhaps too far for you folks who seem to moor in Wales and Anglesey so i reckon its safe.

Do i get a provisional??

No mention of you having a funbox on board when you were in front of me in the marina lock, but know I know I'll have to check it.

When we were there there were some unofficial buoys but will confess to following a local the first time we went through!

That'll be Spud Mash and Potato. I think they where put out by the Hoylake sailing club not sure may be Steve can answer that one, but been there many times. never tried it with a Manchester liner though.:D
And yep it's a long way to the bar. You can leave Queens Chanel quite safely at Q5 and go over the tongue it's about an hour or 5 miles saved, rock gut will save you 2 hrs on the bar for HH and all points west.

And Mike k do they still do a "Niagara" though the lock in and out of Liverpool Marina.
To explain that The lock keepers use the gates to level the lock instead of the paddles.

am no expert on lock engineering or practice but it seems the gates open slightly to take the rush then after a short while fully open. no probs though.

Hi Mike k. Yep thats the way they have always done it, just gets a bit awkward if they open the gates a bit to much straight away, and you are in the middle of the lock hanging on the the boat next to you.:D
In the early days we toyed with the thought we could do a straight though if they opened all the gates together and hence the term doing a "Niagara" .:D

in reply to what happened here with the bashed in back door, too much imbibing from our home fun box I think, what a mess, £200 plus, plus vat to repair it. Henry being the good dog that he is, urrrm, had nothing to do with it.

PD Advice please

Visited Conway and PD Today. It was a wee bit wild over there.

At PD I had a chat with Dave and it looks like a berth there this year is on the cards.:D

Recommendations for better positions in the inner Dock please?
Beverley is not good on long steep ladders especially after a tipple:)

How bad is it under the trees with sap?

I assume where Phil and Liz are moored is pretty good?

Didnt have time to look in showers etc are they ok ?

How noisy is the bridge at night?

We have a large carry on Fun Box will one be sufficient?
Our small ragnstink does have loads of small secret storage places:)

Do you think I need any additional hatch security?

Would a combination lock be sufficient deterrent to Kwackers?:)

Had a nice light bite in the Gard FFon for Lunch. The menu looks good and it had the MIL's thumbs up...

We look forward to revisiting an old cruising ground and making new boating friends this year.

Trees & sap are an issue at PD, try to get a mooring between the bridge and the lock, i.e. beyond the overhanging trees. The bridge is loud, but it does go quiet at night, or get your fun box out and you won't hear anything.

I don't like the ladders, the dog doesn't either. Try the crab salad at the y gaforn its fab.

Glad to hear we'll be having the pleasure of your company! IMHO the best places through the lock are halfway between the bridge and the end of the dock on the S/B side as you enter. The ladders aren't too steep, but if they're a bit too much I'd go on the P/S, anywhere between where we are and the end. Where we are is good for getting onand off but we're only there in winter, we go into the outer harbour for summer. As you've noticed, there are trees that side, they can be a bit problematic occasionally during the year, but that's trees for you!

I think it's safe to say the showers aren't the best, but there is talk of them being tidied up sometime this year.

The bridge isn't a problem, there's little or no traffic over it at night, we aren't bothered by it where we are.

The funbox situation sounds fine :)

Boat security isn't a problem, but a combination lock has no chance of protecting your fun box from Kwackers & Co :D

I always carry a pair for such emergencies :)

:D:D

Thanks for the feedback Phil and Deborah.

I have just passed on PDs details to another interested and very well know forumite...

He has a much bigger fun box....

Have the charts for the Straits been updated recently as mine pre-date Kwacker antics.
I assume his knocking bits off rocks and ploughing furrows in sand banks would mean major corrections are now overdue.:D

Is that big "Erratic" boulder in Friars bay still there? Just a bit up towards Penmon from where the old lifeboat station used to be? Used to have a fixed marker on it but that was a very long time ago.

Lots of glacial erratics along that foreshore, most people stay in the channel or hit the sandbank in the middle. Don't forget the old Stone barge down by the Limekilns, that still dries at LW.

The Ferry Swatchway (opposite what used to be the Mermaid pub) has changed a couple of times since charts were made & when I last looked was almost at right angles across the strait.

Caernarfon Harbour trust have excellent chartlets of the Bar, the Swellies & Conway river pilotage, including the current bouy positions. Well worth downloading before a visit.
