Just got back from Burnham Week where we raced (hahahahahahahahaha!!!!!) Full Circle in Class 6 White Sails Family Cruisers, Local Handicap.
As neither Lynn nor Catherine had ever raced anything before except plastic ducks on a pond, and we were short handed except when NAS popped along for a day, I am able to make the following observations, related to our own efforts.

Sadler 34SE is definitely faster than us everywhere.
Benny 311 faster than us except on a broad reach.
SO35 points quite well but takes ages to accelerate and is not fast.
The Genoa is huge.
Single line reefing on a 6.5kt broad reach in F5 was easy just by winching. Excellent.
Short tacking up a river 75 yards wide with 200 other boats puts us down the toilet every day.
Floating downwind is also not fast, unless you are on an 18ft long Old Gaffer with 3000 sq ft of assorted sails up.
Short distance downwind poling out is best done with the boathook rather than the whisker pole.
Going aground does not necessarily ruin my day (Hee Hee).
Our 'racer' is very comfortable to live on 4 up for 2 weeks.
The shower is bloody excellent.
Yanmar water impellers ought to last more than 72 hours running time.
Hooking a mooring bouy riser chain on the rudder will ruin your day. Retire, theres a good chap (Sorry Neil). Motoring off in astern showed no damage caused.
Barbeques and meals served on the cockpit dining table are splendid.
2 inches of waterline were recovered when I took 350kg off for the week. Couldn't be arsed to remove any more. Might do next year though.
Got more than a few 'Nice Boat Mister' comments. Pleased.
A low bow and raising a goblet of claret to the gallant race staff on the finish line produces applause but no improvement on position.
We achieved 4th in Class for the week, and notably a 2nd and a 3rd place giving us some glassware to look at.
Very friendly class racing, well recommended as a fun diversion for next year.
Lynn was enquiring about an Impala to play with. Only kidding.

I'm sure Jim will give you some good informed opinion....

All I can add, is that I have added the SO35 with lifting keel to the list that I am viewing at the Southampton Boat Show in a couple of weeks time.... I thought she was lovely....and sailed very nicely indeed... not a rocket ship, but felt solid and made good way.....
 
It is a splendid caravan that needs f4 to get it going, and needs reefing at the same time. I have the lift keel version with twin rudders which need to be underway to steer it, as there is no propwash flow over the rudders. As my first wheel steered boat, I find the steering feedback very dead, but I am told that most boats are like that.
If you want to race properly, buy the Sun Fast!
Pleased that it dries out well upright, not pleased that I had to pay to have a keel box mod to siphon away trapped water.
It is nice and dry upwind in a F6 without the sprayhood which I deleted. F8 in 4m of water crosiing Thames Estuary proved she is nice upwind, and pushed a lot of water sideways without noticeably upsetting slamming.
I had a third reef added, and dont forget to order the spinnaker gear option which is an essential and very good value for money (I didnt and it cost me about 500 quid more to fit myself!)
Cavernous bow locker eats the 2 anchors and 80m of chain, 2 large ball fenders and 4 24 inch round fenders. Windlass excellent.
Cabin and interior is splendid for 4 for a holiday (we have the 2 cabin version).
Convert the port cockpit locker by cutting out the floor and adding a vertcal bulkhead, which gives excellent locker space (otherwise paltry). View it on Jeanneau-owners network.
Also have removeable forestay, costly but safe.
Engine is spectacular, new 3YM30. Smooth and economical, very quiet, 8.7 knots in flat water. Envy of my friends, except the water impeller failure(more to follow)
Lots of work and mods to make it sailable properly, add about 6-7 grand to the final price for electronics and other fitttings like furling jammers, cruising chute gear, jackstays, fire extinguishers etc.
Sails are OK, prefer the Main to the Genoa, would replace with bi radial. I also added a tri-radial Cruising chute, very nice but very huge. Get a snuffer!

Overall, I got exactly what I wanted and paid for, and I expect to own it for a long time.

Sounds like fun Jim. I may be starting to race our new toy in a club handicap series somewhere soon - what this space.
I guess I ought to get a new impellor for my 3Ym30 then as it now has 50 odd hours on it!
Jim what prop have you got and what RPM do you acheive? I'm still getting 6 knots top but the engine revs to almost 4000 if I let it - I need to adjust the prop pitch methinks!

She did look lovely on the water and I thought you looked a lot quicker in the heavier airs - particularly on the Thursday. We had a great time too (first over the line on Thursday but slaughtered on handicap!).

The weather made it a fantastic week.. See you next year.

why wait a year?
Anytime you are around pop on for a beer. Maybe even see you up the shallow end of the Roach?
Agree with NAS actually, thought that the little Malbec 240 looked the biz, and is obviously v.fast.

Thanks good appraisal, wish more people would do the same about their own boats. It gives a better perspective than the less than critical so called boat tests in the mags.
