Certainly a beautful site, especially sitting in the office today looking out at grey sky's and rain.

"Suhaili", with the very greatest respect to her eminent designer, William Atkin, and to Sir Robin K-J, has always seemed a bit tubby and slow.
"GP4" on the other hand has "60's racer" written all over her. A fast lady in every respect.
"LL" is a perfectly practical, very nice, boat, well designed by a first class British designer, Frederick Shepherd, and very well built.
Besides, I have never forgotten Sir Alec Rose's account of opening a tin of his wife's fruit cake, at about the point where Sir Francis Chichester was sprouting mung beans.

Fear not she still a ketch, it was the angle I was takeing the photographs from.
I took the photographs on Wednesday last week, and a similar image will be across 2 pages in October's issue

I sailed lively Lady in 1976 when she was on loan to the Island Cruising Club. not the easiest of boats to handle as she carried enormous weather helm. We got her designer to come for a sail with us but he couldn't work it out. The Haslar wind vane self steering couldn't handle it either, except when sailing on a very broad reach.
I do hope they have sorted it out by now.

Depending on how well a sailing boat is designed and its sails trimmed etc they usually have at least some weather helm (they tend to steer into the wind) or lee helm (they tend to steer away from the wind).
If they are badly out of trim they might have excessive weather or lee helm and be a b*st*rd to steer.
IIRC it is generally considered a 'good thing' to have slight weather helm so that the boat will automatically head up into the wind if the tiller is let go. Lee helm would result in the boat turning down wind with the possibility of an involuntary jibe.

Its a yachts natural tendency to want to turn into the wind.
Few yachts are perfectly balanced so its preferable to have a yacht with a slight tendency to turn into the wind and stop than turn away from the wind and go faster.
In extreme cases I have sailed very badly balanced yachts which were like driving a transit van with one flat front tyre!!(Is that terminology you can relate to?? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif)

A little weather helm is an optional extra found on most boats. Look in the after locker. Its usually clipped up under the lid - easily missed. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
