Having travelled like many on this forum etc. I am constantly amazed at the waste and seemingly uncontrolled spending by some of the worlds agencies.

I was in Angola and Cabinda a few years back. The number of Land Cruisers and other expensive autos were astounding. But they all had UN Refugee logos on. This is not the only place you see this. It seems that first the UN Agenices must have latest Land Cruisers etc. before they set-foot in the place.
The EU gladly seem to provide limo's to all and sundry in their commissions around various countries ..... OK I agree that good and reliable vehicles should be provided - it is aof course also an advertisement.

BUT is it necessary to waste money on buying expensive cars, most expenisve location rental of offices / flats / houses, etc. etc.

I asked a couple of the guys I met in Angola - we were waiting for a flight out- UN was changing the team at the time, I was there for Oil Inspections .... - where had they been in Angola etc. and what had they seen ???? I think you can imagine the answer ...... a lot of b..........t and finally very quietly admitted they hadn;t really travelled out of the city centre !! Mind I said ADMITTED ..... not alleged !!!!

The UN internet site has a lengthy index one can use to navigate to items of interest (on the English language home page it is down towards the bottom right hand side of the page). There is no index items for things like "budget", expenditure", "cost", "accountability", etc. Just what one would expect for an unrestrained bureaucracy.

Perhaps one reason the USA is not very popular in the UN is that the USA UN mission claims the responsibility for reducing the number of UN personnel over the last few years.
