Since buying my boat at the start of the season I have been religiously plugging in the shore power before using anything 12v to keep my 4 (old) batteries nicely charged. Got down to the boat this weekend (having not used it for 6 weeks) to find all the batteries knackered. Turns out I dont even have a battery charger!! I have been unwittingly keeping the batteries topped up by using the boat every weekend. Does anybody else have full 240v shore power without a battery charger? Has the previous owner snaffled it? Why havent I looked for it before now?

Well I've got shorepower and no permanent battery charger and don't intend fitting one as the boat is used regularly which keeps the batteries pretty well topped up. I do however carry a decent car type battery charger and a small portable generator which are used when required.

So has your battery charger been snaffled, maybe, maybe not!

IMHO, having shorepower and no battery charger (of any type) is crass stupidity. At least you (LJS) have some means of charging your batteries. but what is the point of shorepower if you have no battery charger? I think your battery charger was probably an pensive one and has bneen "retained" by the previous owner.

Can't imagine that a boat like the Corniche has shorepower but no battery charger. Previous owner has probably indeed snaffled it but, since battery chargers seem to die and need replacing once in a while, you probably have'nt lost out too much. Definitely worthwile investing in a good quality marine spec charger especially if you intend keeping your boat in service over winter

Hum!, bit surprised that as you have shore power you do not appear to have a switchboard which shows you where to apply the power to - so to speak.

Presume therefore you plug in and get power to ac sockets only? what about fridge, water heater etc?

On the earlier corniche's i've seen you don't get a switch panel for 12v or 240v - just fuses for both. The battery charger on these ones seemed to plug into one of the sockets.

Yes, it really is a non-flybridge Corniche. Only 4 made I believe. It has a sliding roof instead.

Its quite a modern one (1989) and it has a switch on the fuse panel that proudly states 'Battery Charger'. It even lights up when pressed. I took the panel off over the weekend to try and trace the wiring and found that it just has a 12v supply to power the LED!!

certainly seems perky.../forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I am just glad I don't have a battery charger as I don't have shorepower, obviously a bit silly if I had fitted one!
