When I fitted a new heads to our Vega last year I did not fit an anti-syphon loop - instead I raised the heads compartment sole by 3" and installed an outlet pipe approx. 2" long. This was on the advice of another Vega owner.

I did not fit an anti-syphon loop on the inlet side either.

After 2000 + miles of sailing with both seacocks left open I have the following observations to make:

- There is NO smell in our heads

- The bowl has NEVER filled up above about 2" of water, even after dozens of continuous miles heeled right over on the starboard tack (heads is on stbd side)

We have sailed in all conditions and never had a problem. I believe that pumping ones' s..t uphill round a metre or more of usually corrugated tubing is asking for stinky troubles . . .

Now tell me we're going to die . . .

Nope...you're not gonna die. :) However, if your thru-hulls were in different locations, or you had a different boat, you might have a very different experience.

Few things are "cast in concrete" or "one size fits all." Your installation works for you....and for you, that's all that matters.

if the head is below waterline, your first (only) line of defence is the non-return valves in the pump. as long as those are in good nick you'll be fine.

Named such as a response to all the gimicks and gadgets / amateur experts out there that advise we should fill our boats with all sorts of wonderful bits and bobs .... instead of getting on and enjoying them.

I too have no anti-siphon valves, but I do have a loop up under the deck .... I too only get max 2" in bowl, I too do not have smell ...... etc.

Actually I am thinking of changing name to the :

BASIC BOATING CLUB yep - The BBC !!

What would have happened on a Port Tack when the heads would be much lower, perhaps under sea water level?

Well done Bob, you have spotted last month's deliberate mistake . . .

I meant port tack of course.
