Is there a cheap and simple way of wiring a connection to transfer NMEA0183 data to an android device? Would a RS232 to USB converter work?

I was looking into this too using a RS232 to usb converter but can't find out how to connect the two nmea wires to the 9-pin RS232 plug. If you find out do please post.

OK, I've just had GPS data going into Opencpn through a USB/2 x 9 pin serial using an On The Go cable into a sony xperia. I downloaded a little app, the cable is the FTDI chipset as opposed to the usual cheaper prolific ones.
Couldn't get ais working though.
What NMEA data & what android device are you using?
It might be easier using a raspberry pi and doing it over wifi. Not that difficult.
