NMEA0183 to Android?

Is there a cheap and simple way of wiring a connection to transfer NMEA0183 data to an android device? Would a RS232 to USB converter work?

OK, I've just had GPS data going into Opencpn through a USB/2 x 9 pin serial using an On The Go cable into a sony xperia. I downloaded a little app, the cable is the FTDI chipset as opposed to the usual cheaper prolific ones.
Couldn't get ais working though.
What NMEA data & what android device are you using?

It might be easier using a raspberry pi and doing it over wifi. Not that difficult.

I want to push the depth reading from a sonar across to a Samsung tablet. I'll use the Navionics app on the tablet to show the received depth and couple with GPS coords to use the SonarMapping facility.

Their website says to use a propriety NMEA to Wifi box but I wondered if there was a cheaper, wired way.

I know that RS232 can feed in to NMEA0183 as that's what I've used recently with a replacement GPS puck to feed the DSC VHF its position coordinates.

If I cannot get the wired version to work then I'll have a go with an Arduino interface next. I don't know the first thing about them but have a young son who is a wizz with them. Unfortunately he's been snapped up by a University so not at home to help for a while.
