Nmea0183 to 2000

My boat has some nmea 2000 and some nmea 0183.

There is an actisense nmea converter behind the switch panel.

Can I connect another nmea 0183 device? Will the 0183 and 2000 networks communivate via the converter?

Or do i need a converter for each individual device?

The NGW1 blurb says "Multiple NGW-1 units can be used to multiplex numerous NMEA 0183 devices onto the NMEA 2000 network". Only one on each. A YakMUX can gather up 3 inputs and output one 0183 feed into your NGW1. The YakMUX will let you select what strings you would need.

0183 has "talker" ports and "listener" ports.

You can connected one talker port to several listener ports. But a listener can only be connected to one talker.

So if you want to RECEIVE 0183 data in your N2K network from multiple devices, you will need a multiplexer. Something like this: PRO-NDC-1E

You can also buy Multiplexers which have the N2K gateway built in, like this one: PRO-NDC-1E2K

If on the other hand you are trying to receive the N2K datastream into multiple 0183 devices, you don't need the MUX.

How about an Emtrak AIS ? Has 0183 and N2K, will also multiplex 2 x 0183 inputs to/from N2K.

I had (still have) an AIS unit with NMEA 0183 and 2k. When it was connected via 2k it threw out false headings. I put in a converter so that I could disconnect the 2k and use the 0183, basically turning it into a one-way 0183 talker. Works fine now but it's very convoluted.

Why are the manufacturers of ais class b not including N2K as standard

Nmea converters just introduces more complexity and potetial failure points in the system

Most are 0183
Even expensive well known brands. If buying we all need to check. AIS is an expensive add-on, and be palmed off on last century tech... ... Really? Not acceptable.

What would be useful would be a vhf/DSC with;
*integrated AIS transponder and GPS
*all tx & rx through the mast head antenna.

Does such an item exist?
At what cost?

All make N2K models. Some have been making N2K versions for decades, My Garmin black box is 15 years old.

It's harder to find a 0183 only AIS than it is to find N2K.

All current model AIS sets I know about offer N2K versions. It's getting hard to even find an AIS transponder which is 0183-only. There isn't one offered at Force4 as far as I can tell.

ALL of the various B900 series models from EmTrak have N2K as well as 0183. See: Products - B900 SERIES - em-trak. Some of them have WiFi and Bluetooth too.

I have the B951 in my boat.

I would be silly to buy an AIS set which is 0183 only and then add a multiplexer if you don't need that for other purposes.

Are you perhaps looking at 2010 catalogue? It's pretty hard to find an 0183-only model these days. Not a single one offered on Force4 as far as I can see.

You might want 0183 for some applications, connected directly to your plotter or to a dedicated AIS display. This will be more responsive.

But for that you would choose a transponder with both 0183 and N2K.

0183 is point-to-point and N2K is a CANBUS data stream -- different principles. 0183 is much better for wind, STW, and compass data where you want high refresh rates and no network noise. I have a B&G H5000 Hercules sailing computer on my boat; wind, boat speed, compass are all connected to that directly with 0183, not N2K. Then the processed and corrected data is put into the N2K network for the displays to read.

I'm aware of cheaper models, but my post was in response to the two you linked to that cost over £400

Data speed for wind etc is 4800 bps, N2K is 250kbps not sure how that makes 0183 better.

Just looked at force 4
First ais i looked at mcmudo smartfind. In the details it says nmea 0183

No mention of N2K
