I would like to fit an ais transponder and connect it to a recent B&G plotter

Cheapest matusec transponder seems to have nmea 0183 and plotter only takes nmea 2000

Does an nmea converter just connect these different networks together? Will i be able to add the transponder to the existing 0183 network?

Or does each 0183 device need its own converter

I'm not very familiar with the electronics on this boat, and I'm not sure how 0183\2000 converters are meant interface.

Can someone give me a simplified explanation?

I would simplify this by saying why buy the cheapo matsutec 0183 only and a converter?

A converter will cost you as much as the difference between an nmea 0183 only matsutec and an Onwa 200a. The 200a is dual nmea standard and also has wifi for optional connection to a tablet.

I know this doesn't directly answer your question but surely it makes more sense!

0183 speaks a different language from N2K, so you don't just "connect the networks".

But you're in luck -- the current B&G plotters, at least the Zeus, have 0183 interfaces, so you can just connect it directly.

Edit: Excluding Vulcan, which unlike the 3S and Zeus S, does not have a built in 0183 interface. If you are using a Vulcan, then you will need a 0183 to N2K converter, like the B&G AT10, or Actisense NGW-1. There are many others on the market -- I think Yacht Devices makes a good one.

A bi-directional one can also be useful if you want to get your network data into a computer for using OpenCPN, in case you are using a Vulcan without an Ethernet port.

On the other hand, if you don't already have the AIS set, why wouldn't you just buy one with native N2K?

Makes perfect sense to buy an AIS with NMEA 2000 (y)
