New Windlass - Chain Locker Dilema

Thanks for the info, that looks quitea set up!

TA Tam Lin, it looks OK at the moment. My intention is not give the additional roller a substancial backing plate, then bolt or weld the two together, so that the new support the existing.

When I bought her, she had (60m of 7mm chain), I thought I was downsizing in that respect. I thougth 30 + 30 would be a sensible amout to carry. Sure I would not use it most trips, but 10m depth and 6:1 could be required in the future, or am I plainly over speccing?

That trip was my first ever single handing, I didn't have the confidence to use the engine and not be at the tiller. I have a few more mile under my belt now so I would probably do as you suggest if the same circumstances were to arise again.

Another method of single handed mooring pick up is to bring a bow line back & outside of lifelines, etc. to a temporary tie point at cockpit. Approach mooring strop to the point that you can gaff it from safety of cockpit. Go to neutral, slip bitter end of bow line thru eye of strop & re-tie bow line at cockpit. You are now moored & mooring strop will slide up to bow cleat as boat sags back. Finish tying up at your convenience.
You can see my bow line running from bow cleat & slip knotted to stanchion at cockpit (white 3 strand) in this pic:

The amount of chain suggested seems a literally staggering weight for a Centaur to carry.

Just a suggestion, if singlehanded how about putting the engine in tickover forward and an autohelm 2000 with a remote control ?

Sea jet , no disrespect to Gary boat , but it's a centaur , 30 mts of 6mm or even 8mm isn't going to make any different , it not as if he going to race it .
Gary it's sound to me that your quite new to this ,
We anchor for nine months each year , and we got to carry enough chain and a good anchor to deal with what every is thrown at us .
I guessing you plainning to use the boat in rivers and maybe a bit of sea fishing where you maybe in deep water while your fishing , the centaur is I remember from my early days have a draft of 1.4 or there about , so you can get in very close when your in a river , so 30 mts is plenty .
While fishing even in 10 mts you still get away with 30 mts , it's not as if you going to spend all night , and if it start to drag a bit while fishing it's not going to be a problem .
I would still go for all chain and stick to 30 mts ,
At the end of the day if it works ok you can always add more chain .

Slight Fred drift. Have you had a good look at your current bow roller? I had to replace mine because the welds were cracking and I know of another Centaur which had the same problem. It would be annoying to fit another one then find out you had to replace the original one.

Tam Lin, that was a good call. I checked it today and here has been a crack at some point, that has been rather expertly welded. I think my plan is to weld the new roller to the old, which will strengthe the starboard side. The port side I'll have an L shape piece welded to it to strengthen it.

Apppreciate the heads up. I has a survery in June last year, either it was not spotted, or not of concern, but I would have thought it would have been mentioned.
