Hear a rumour about it, if its what I think it is,a couple of manufactures are going to be using them.
They involve if I have this right, A VERTICAL GEAR BOX AND FORWARD FACING PROPS and a stepped hull.
They pull the boat though the water rather than push it, Its meant to be very fast and highly manoeuvrable, that about all I know.

Sounds fun. Anybody accidently tried putting an outboard on the 'wrong' end of a boat and pullin' instead of pushin'?. Surely someone has tried that, though maybe not when a bit sober!

Re: Duoprop it is !!

Well no doubt they will fill us in when they are good and ready. I suppose the skeggy bit being behind the props will at least mean the growth is blown off a bit quicker!

Re: Duoprop it is !!

What I want to know is :

1) Can they take the torque from my 6.9L, slow reving, 2-stroke diesels?
2) How much are the replacement props? as they are bound to suck some nasty stuff in....
3) Can I fit ropecutters?

and much more of couse ....

I guess that the natural progression is as with the Euro fighter, to control direction, the rudders will be on or at the forward quarter of the vessel ? Highly manouverable or what? alternatively the engine is inverted and the Turbo sucks the boat along with a device for separating the Hydrogen from the oxygen ( out of the sea water) and the propellors are replaced with a fan to assist the thrust (Joke)
best use for a volvo that I can think of is as an Anchor!!

How does the prop now if it's pulling or pushing, all they have done is moved the prop to the front of the leg.
What they have done is produced a powerboat version of the saildrive, now comes out the bottom of the hull. By moving it a little forward you have a proper aft cabin without shaft drives, and save the cost of a heavy transome.
Are they going to fit them in tunnels?, because unlike a stern drive, you cannot lift them.

Just struck me, mount them near mid ships, if they rotate 180 degree, you do not near thrusters.
You could just rotate 90 degree and go side ways, select a angle between and you go at a angle, forward or reverse dictate which way.

Great, but if in the middle wouldnt it be a real cow to clear a piece of rope from the damn thing! At the moment its only a nightmare with shafts! Clearing an outdrive is so much easier.

If as Julie say it's meant for stepped hulls, not a great deal of use amidships, as that part of the hull will be rising out of the water at speed

Aircraft seem to have managed nicely by "pulling" air for a year or three.
As for mounting the drive system midships the "schottel"? system has been in use for at least 30 years to give 360 degree drive on tugs and the like.Just imagine a couple of outboards middle of boat and mounted able to rotate in every direction.
Other thing recalled was massive hydrofoil type sked under tug to enable it to take the ground without knackering props and drives.Only real problem seemed to be keeping the massive drive belts in place connecting the drives to the 600 hp engines.

Had noticed some odd things on aircraft, thanks I know what they are now.

But is it a new polpusion system?, or have the moved the drive assembly from in front the prop, to the back, i.e. rotated it throught 180 degree and fit opposite hand prop ?

Looks like they are coping the idea from the current bunch of cruise ships (incl QM2) - these have pods that pull rather than push the boat.

The engines supply power to electric motors in the pods that lie fore and aft (props for'd) when steaming and rotate for manouvering.
