I bet you're going to ask me for exact size! I don't know. But, anyone any idea how much two new props for a Squadron 50 would cost?
Corrosion doesn't happen on its own.
It is the product of electrolysis.
Yes, it could have been lack of anode in the past but could also be other parts of the galvanic circuit.
For example, there are often shaft brushes that complete the galvanic circuit between the shafts/props and the ship's earth connected to the main hull anodes.
Some installations add an anode to the shaft - personally, I can't see the point of shaft anodes - I would prefer a full electrical circuit.
Shaft anodes just seem wrong to me but maybe they are ok in a system without shaft brushes.
the reason I asked was because we had a similar problem on the first boat (similar size) that we bought and it WAS the brushes - completely knackered.
I bought new props (about £2500 from memory for the pair - 13 years ago) and then I took my time having the old ones reworked.
I tried a couple of places - the people who did a good job in the end were Hamble Props - cost around £500 to refurbish/repair both.
Hope that helps
Anything else some out of the survey?
Why did you have the old props refurbed, was it for spares just in case?
Does £4k for new props, balanced and fitted sound feasible?
Its been a while since I bough a prop but I would think you would be nearer to £3K each these days. They will have been made either by Teignbridge or Clements. Also think the damaged prop could be repaired too. Worth a try.
On our "new to us" this year Velasco 37F we priced up some new props as the surveyor thought there may be some early stage electrolysis. All turned out to be fine but priced up replacements at about £2,500.
Has anyone used propspeed? Was thinking about getting it put on at the end of the season?
IMO, the big problem with coating the props is finding something that sticks.
Everything that I've tried comes off.
In fact, half of it comes off - the rest is a ?astard to get off the next time you want to coat them.
I just polish mine now.
When we had a boat in the UK, we just left the props unpainted - pbrackets, rudders and trim tabs etc were painted with ordinary anti foul.
In the med, I polish the lot but we get very cheap lifts and pressure washes that make it all manageable.
This is a mid season lift
Note that we have aggressive marine growth - It won't be like this in Torquay
