New Project

Well….good and bad first sea trail.

good….
Temps and pressure may all good. 30+ knots at 3000 rpm.

Bad

starboard wouldn’t rev over 3300. It got up there but then the revs drop back and waver. I’m think air in fuel issue as I have been chasing those on the other engine.

Smoke coming from underneath expansion tank. Like a hot oil smoke. Could be paint burning off but doubt it. I’ve checked all around the oil cooler and no sign of leaking but valve cover did leak oil so could be hitting the manifold and burning off. I’m also going to tighten the manifold bolts as they’ve been through heat expansion to see if it’s exhaust.

lastly…have a new sound on the same engine coming from cylinder 4/5 area.

My day went from this…

Check out this video. Didn’t sound like that before. Be interested in opinions

it’s not an in your face rattle but it’s there and different than before

I found the clearance on number 5 was off.

Intake was very tight and exhaust was slack.

Sounded fine cold! I’m hoping beyond hope it soundfine again once back together.

Not a great day if I’m honest

tbh, I'd be amazed if you didn't have any issues Mr G.
good luck sorting it out
Well….noise is fixed ?

Just lack of revs to go!

pre filter and engine filter full. I’m using 12mm fuel hose (thought I order 10mm) and facor 500 pre filters so I do t think it’s lack of fuel from that side.
im going to change the lift pump as that’s cheap and easy and is probably 20 years old
after that consider injector plunger I read about on another thread. @volvopaul said It’s easy in the thread so that’s good

ill see how all that goes.

A good day today.

Oh….I found the smoke source…..crank case breath pipe. No chuffing at the cap (did the airborne oil cap test too?) so could just be loads of crap and moisture burning off. I’ll see how it goes

Good luck G. So the smoke was coming from the breather pipe?
Yeah…..it has a oil separator on the other side of the engine then an open pipe (no filter can) across to the other side of the engine where the smoke / steam was coming from. I’m thinking it was more steam. Both oil coolers feel the same temperature externally. These haven’t been run at speed in a long long time. I was think blow by but no pressure at the cap and it seems constant rather than chuffing. I’m changing the lift pump but was thinking if it’s leaking internally…..that would explain lack of revs at the top end and maybe leaking diesel into the oil? Dip remained constant though. I’m going to change oil and filter on that engine again anyway just to be sure. No doubt it’s been cleaning the internals over a few hours use and worth doing.

She's a corker mate. I hope you keep this one and we missed you this weekend. We're still lounging about at Trefor but will shortly move to Llandwyn if you feel up to stretching her legs.

Hi mate. I’m just building my confidence in her currently ???

Would like to see a longer video when it's sorted. Impressive but was frustratingly short clip.

I've only ever seen them on the Broads lol. Can't do them any good idling all the time, in fact not sure how it's possible to keep in the speed limits at idle. Must be re-propped.

I do apologise!??

Seems positive then. Hope you get a good result over the next few tests. Hang in there!
