It dropped through the letter box this a.m. and what a disappointment!

Where's the in detail fuel additives test we were promised? Not a mention of Soltron, no comparative tests just a load of bolx any of us could have written.

Seems MBM is now down market and MBY upmarket, who's going to fill the middle ground which I for one want to read about.

All very disappointing as I have always looked forward to receiving my copy of MBM, now considering cancelling my subscription. Still there's always the article on knitting your own fender socks that's already been mentioned elsewhere to look forward to!! Or how about splicing together old pieces of rope to save buying new or build your own hull from papier mache, all areas which need urgent investigation.

Not having seen MBM yet I can't comment but I have to agree there is too much time spent by MBM/MBY on articles about superduper yachts which belies the fact that the average reader owns the regular boats you see in any Marina.

Spot light on used boats each month would be good they do it every now and then but a regular feature would be nice. Your quite right though most readers don't have mega bucks and boat on a fairly tight budget giving up other activities to do it. (Like eating) hark I hear the phone I think thats the marina calling to tell me my renewal is up and that the cost is up by 6%, market forces you know.

Re: yes but...

Not got current MBM yet, but surely there can be some aspirational elemsnt too? Car magazine have nice new cars, and ferraris and so on in them, quite different from normals daily rustbucket. Likewise, womens magazines are plastered with pics of fab food and very attractive wimmin! Note sure if wimmin would read "back of bus monthly" or at least the advertisers wouldn't bother, likewise sales of "jalopy" magazine, reviewing ancient banger cars have never exactly taken off.

Re: yes but...

Ah! See now your wrong. Its called 'I can only afford a crappy clapped out 1972 Ford Cortina'......or known by its readership as Practical Classics!!

Don't know about the the new MBM, haven't got a copy, well the woman in smiths said "this ain't no library yer know' So I put it backe and sculked out. Anyhow, they gotta review all the flash 'spensive stuff so it attracts people to the MBM cruising club. Thats sounds a bit suss to me. We should start a rival, as I've said before. We could have our own subscribers club......Forum users cruising klub!!!!

OK, to hell with it. Unbolt it and we'll use it as an anchor!

Re: practical classics

Re: yes but...

But all of the Car classic machines also aspire to the most exclusive and expensive . For every genuine article on the Ford Cortina there's an article on a 1923 Hispano Suiza whose ineterior was designed for the Shah of Mirabel and crafted from the skin of a million vestel virgins.

The practical motor boater would soon have as many articles on the restoration of a 1972 Riva SuperAquarama and its 48th coat of varnish.

Anyway I thought we had our own downmarket boating magazine for those poor deprived souls ...isn't it called Practical Boat Owner? I enjoy it !

...I wanna boat please..

Aspirational

Is that a word? Oh well, agree that we all want to read about things which we think we can never afford, we all like to dream don't we.

On the cover we have the Sealine 39, River Medway (where the hell is that?) cruising guide, Brittany by trailboat (14'!!), understanding collision regs (for the umpteenth time) and restoring a wooden classic (a hull saved from a bonfire). Inside we have more on cleaning your boat (Matt, you should read this bit and then pass it on to your girly) and yawn, tidal vectors.

Now you don't have to buy the mag, just send 50% of cover price to LJS to reimburse me for this in depth review. Now that's what I call true value, maybe MBM could include it on their readers tips page!

Thankyou.

Funnily enough, Ive just set up a straw poll on my website Boaters Lounge (see below) to get some idea of how much people spend on their boating each year with the intention of establishing where the main volume of boaters fit in the spend range from under £1000/year to over £10k/year.
I wonder if the old rule of thumb holds true ....say 80% under £x and only 20% over £x.........and wot is £x?

Spot the Tom Gregory photo competition?

So how many pics of TG can you find? I got to six, and bearing in mind he don't even work for them, reckon that's pretty good.

But as regards the mag itself, well sorry to disagree with LJS, I think it's a good mix. Fair selection of DIY including the Blue Peter, "we made a fridge out of an old washing up liquid bottle" etc, first part of the diesel test, renovating old boats, cruising further afield a bit of instructional stuff, four new boat reviews from a little 'un up to the £200K Sealine 39 etc etc.

Overall I think it's pretty damn good.

Well done to MBM. Well that's all IMHO of course.
