Hang on, hang on here boatone, on your survey, which is probably valuable in putting every body's SHMBO off boating, what do you mean capital costs including mooring, fuel, maintenance, etc. These aren't capital costs, they're the main costs.
What else did you have in mind for costs? And if one has replied, and his cost is a new engine, thats 100% at over £10,000....
I think it makes sense........."The figures in the poll cover everything except capital cost - ie moorings, fuel, insurance, maintenance, spare parts etc."
I suppose I could rephrase it as "The figures in the poll cover moorings, fuel, insurance, maintenance, spare parts etc. ie everything except capital cost" .....would that be better?
Take your point about the swmbo but I really dont think they are that naive ....even if you do!

Err i was dead serious.Well impressed with all them posh boats with nifty little sockies.Must have a set and now.Can i have em with Leopard written in italian on side.
Just hold tight dear it will not be so rough when we get round the corner, trust me.
Yes , valid point. I think I was trying to find some reasonably innoccuous way of gauging how many people boat at the 'economic' end of the market compared with those who are able to indulge themselves with much more exotic craft. How does one decide where the dividing line lies?
I suppose I could have categorised by boat value and assumed that running costs will vary proportionately?
I was largely triggered by the davecuss response below ..."what about a budget section for us not so well off but who still enjoy it just as much as the fat cats if not more....."

First copy ever bought(At SBS). Thought it was pretty good.
It had a very useful article on the much maligned Medway and no in depth drone on about 150 ft 50000 hp Sunpredebarge which will never go anywhere proper other than the Adriatic cos the fenders might get dirty.
Just hold tight dear it will not be so rough when we get round the corner, trust me.
Light weight Dom,
I got them going back to 1980 plus a few odd ones. Wife constanty complainig about having to squeeze in between the mountains of mags to get to the loo.
Number 1 daughter going to uni on Sunday so I'm soon to have a new library.
Chris.
What do you mean the sea gull in front's walking !!!
What p....s me off about MBM/MBY these days is the duplication of articles. MBY test ruggedised laptops this month, MBM are doing the same next month. MBM test the Sealine C39 this month, MBY are doing the same test next month. There's a lot of very transparent cost cutting going on here to the detriment of both magazines. Its getting to the point where I'm questioning buying both mags
Have to agree with tcm though. There should be an aspirational element to the content of MBY/MBM. I might not be able to afford the latest Sunseeker Superyacht but I sure like to dream about owning one.
Its not only between the 2 IPC titles. MBM have a lot of P Caplan doing his diy things. If you bought Boatmart a couple of months earlier you would have seen it in there too! One that springs to mind is 'rigging a rib thender' article. Same photos same write up.
OK, to hell with it. Unbolt it and we'll use it as an anchor!
Transparent cost-cutting? How so? Do you imagine both features will be written by the same people across two competing magazines? And when a significant new car comes out, don't all the car magazines test it? Of course they do, and any serious buyer will want to read several tests to get as many informed opinions as possible.
cos they're both ipc-owned, we unwashed praps feel that MBM/MBY should divvy up the subjects, making it necessary to buy both mags. Whereas, in fact, the mags compete to a fairly high degree, don't "hold off" from top topics and ace new products, and don't share the same fridge. Or at least if they do share the same fridge, they might easily pinch each others sarnies or milk.
And thats why I only buy 1 car mag and 1 bike mag a month. I've been reading both MBY and MBM for years and there has never been as much duplication of articles as there is now. Did both editors really dream up a test on ruggedised laptops in isolation? Please! I agree that the C39 is a significant new boat but there must have been 10 new models at SIBS any of which would have merited a test.
OK, if I accept that both magazines operate in isolated splendour, then could I put in a request that you talk to each other because sooner or later people like me are going to stop buying one or another
I found it a bit disappointing.
Nothing in particular. I like "practical" and I like "boat tests", I enjoy the letters, when they are interesting, which few were this month.
Sorry (yawn), just a bit boring.
I'll still buy it. Hopefully other issues will have more for me.
Read it once yesterday and again today. Had to as the new "design" is by the throw it all together chaotic school.
Contents are fine, though I, like others, also hope it doesn't go too upmarket as there's always MB&Y for that end of the spectrum.
What I hate are the multiple "boxes" scattered about the place (Pages 2,3,11,16-22 for example) and which often mean that when reading an article you have to keep moving to other parts of the page. They also divert one's eyes from the actual content.
OK so I'm over 50 and my eye sight has worsened and I get confused when I am confronted with fussy overdesign.
Sorry, I sound like more of an Old Git than the man himself.
