New boat!

Hinged seats are best for a fishing boat. But it’s very difficult on a curved surface and the proper boat bench hinges are very expensive and very hard to find
Funny enough…..just been looking at that. Current idea……..

deck hinges secured to the ”wall”……tubing under the seat base secured with tube brackets to the seat underside.

hinge bracket on the end of the tubing to make the legs with a t piece going across between the legs.

the legs would then fold up when not in use the the seat stows flat vertically or can be removed. Few clips and catches to keep secure. I’m hoping there’s enough play in the Bimini decking fitting to allow for the curve angles? £100 and some ply to find out if it works.

comments?

None of the seats in the photos look comfortable to my eyes. I think I would hate all of them. Too low down so almost squatting rather than sitting. No proper back rest.
Why not wait until you have used the boat a few times before deciding what's best?

Unfo

unfortunately not…..that lot is £77 from China. Sea screw want £9.12 for each T piece plus postage. I’m still looking about though. Just handy to have a list of bits all in one place
Your system will be flimsy and need folding legs to support it with those hinges. American style sports fishers (like yours) use these (and other) types of hinges

Some good points.

the sides on my boat are quite high so the seats will be 45mm of the deck which is standard seat height. Nice little round table for the beers! It’s only got a suicide seat and the helm leaning post. I think I needs something as it’s dead space….unless fishing of course.

very nice. I was planning to have legs just like in this picture….but combine the attachment and legs in one in effect.

take your point on strength though.

Geometry question

thinking about these stainless steel brackets.

the hull has a curve….if I use 3 per seat (plus foldout legs at the front edge) will the mechanisms foul as they are not mounted on a flat surface. I sort of think they will but can’t figure out why!

I can make wedges for mounting so the are flat to one another.

Yes they will.
You could hard fix the verticals to 'the boat' and put the fixings on the horizontals to the seats on sliders? Probably the only way round it.

Take a look at the older Formula lower cockpit seats and how they fold away. It may give you some ideas. The seat flips up under the backrest. i.e. the top of the backrest is hinged rather than the seat, which flips up behind. Not the best of pics but you may get the idea

I went through the same thought process. I even ordered the same brackets but they never materialised and eBay and PayPal rejected my claim?
My conclusion was a piece of wood, sculptured on one side to mount on the boat and straight the other to mount the seat to. The other problem is that you may have to weld a bar to all three locking levers so that one person can lift the seat

OK. Here. This is how the Formula seats work in conjunction with this guy's plan Top secret design ideas

Folding bench seats
Again to keep the deck clean, I want to add folding seating for 6 passengers ( I know it says 8 in the diagram) and 2 additional seats in the cabin.
These brackets from Boat Outfitters are seriously hardcore — They are auto-locking, spring loaded and have a load capacity of 1800lb!

Here’s the plan for the seats
Basically the inner side of the gunwale is upholstered giving the whole edge of a boat a nice soft / padded room type feel. The seats fold up and fold down when you need them. The backrests fold up allowing the seat to fold in before dropping down again. The underside of the seat is finished in GRP mould to conform to the gunwale sides for aesthetics. That means the deck is completely free for fishing adventures as well as cruising.

oh, backrest on stainless steel piano hinge of suitable thickness to allow for curvature. Encased with white vinyl for aesthetics. See my pic
