I've just bought a new boat. Also a new userid as I forgot the password for moondancer and it's registered under an old email address, as it's a long while since i've posted here.
The boat is a lifting keel MGC 27 which is is pretty good condition and called Presto. (Does anyone know a previous owner). It looks like it was very well looked after up until a couple of years ago and then just neglected. Google shows it was raced around the island race for several years. It's got very good instrumentation and running rigging just really needs a bit of cleaning and replacing a couple of bits and pieces. The engine is a volvo saildrive that runs pretty well on dry land.
Who knows I might enter class 6 of Burnham week for the first time in years if it is running.
I have a few questions for the great and the good:
1) As I bought it from a boatyard who didn't know the main original owner i've got no service history. I'm getting the engine serviced. Should I replace the saildrive rubber seal? I've read conflicting views, some saying they never leak others to replace if in doubt. Is there a way to check them on dry land?
2) Has anyone else had an MGC 27? Any views on how they sail etc.
3) Anyone know anything about the keel mechanism? It all looks pretty beefy with a self contained unit that bolts up to the boat and then a stainless screw to wind it up and down. It doesn't look serviceable though. Any experience of an MGC 27 lift keel ?
Anyway looking forward to launching in a month or so.
