I've just bought a new boat. Also a new userid as I forgot the password for moondancer and it's registered under an old email address, as it's a long while since i've posted here.

The boat is a lifting keel MGC 27 which is is pretty good condition and called Presto. (Does anyone know a previous owner). It looks like it was very well looked after up until a couple of years ago and then just neglected. Google shows it was raced around the island race for several years. It's got very good instrumentation and running rigging just really needs a bit of cleaning and replacing a couple of bits and pieces. The engine is a volvo saildrive that runs pretty well on dry land.

Who knows I might enter class 6 of Burnham week for the first time in years if it is running.

I have a few questions for the great and the good:

1) As I bought it from a boatyard who didn't know the main original owner i've got no service history. I'm getting the engine serviced. Should I replace the saildrive rubber seal? I've read conflicting views, some saying they never leak others to replace if in doubt. Is there a way to check them on dry land?

2) Has anyone else had an MGC 27? Any views on how they sail etc.

3) Anyone know anything about the keel mechanism? It all looks pretty beefy with a self contained unit that bolts up to the boat and then a stainless screw to wind it up and down. It doesn't look serviceable though. Any experience of an MGC 27 lift keel ?

Anyway looking forward to launching in a month or so.

A friend has a fixed keel version and regularly beats my Ufo 31 on Wednesday nights and Burnham Week, even though I have to give him time on handicap.
I hate him!.
A great boat, hope we might see you at Burnham Week if it goes ahead.

Re the Saildrive rubber seal.
Whilst VP advise replacing this at 7 year intervals, mine is ( as far as I know ) well over 30 years old , the boat has been in my ownership for the past 15 years . I know of others like me - no leaks !

Congratulations moondancer, a great little boat, both fast and comfortable and with the lifting keel perfect for the east coast. I used to have a MG 335 and loved her, could be very lively in a blow, it was no scanwigen regarding quality but functional and comfortable. Enjoy great choice

The volvo has one main rubber seal plus a thin fairing rubber seal on the outside.
The Yanmar has two main with a water sensor in the middle plus the outside fairing seal.
The issue is that if it splits, you sink.
I've not seen or heard about many failing due to old age BUT I have seen ones damaged due to the saildrive being inadvertently being picked up when the boat gets hauled out.
It happened to my boat in the past and its easy to do if you're not aware.

Insurance also might be an issue if you make a total loss claim if its not been changed within the last 7 or so years.

I've entered for the Saturday but only for class 6, so we'll wave you off as you start earlier. I'm guessing that it will probably go ahead just no prize giving.
