New boat Costa Brava or straight home

For what it's worth, if I bought a boat in Mallorca I would be spending a couple of weeks there too before moving on. But I still maintain that SCM would be a good place to have the boat delivered too pending trucking back to the UK.

Thanks for all your thoughts. 2K per month berth in Mallorca does not sound too bad. The berth it was currently on in Portals cost 6K I was told.
I am considering leaving it there. However the Costa Brava would be easier logistically as I need to get a load of boat stuff/toys there unless we drive to Mallorca. Also in the right place for transport home.

Portals is the most expensive marina on the Island..... Marina De Mallorca costs me E2500 per month in June and September ( this is the summer rate I believe) on a 58 foot boat.

Remember you dont need all your kit for a 3-4 week holiday in a new place ( my view!). Not sure logistics are any different. Nick Barke from boats.co.uk has a van going down every 10 days or so - his stuff comes first but he will fill the rest of the van with stuff of people. If you font have his details PM me.

Webbs run a weekly service which is £150 per cubic metre and 120 for each subsequent so getting stuff there is pretty simple. http://www.webbs-removals.co.uk

Ive used webbs to move stuff to/from majorca in the past, theyre good.

I even has them transport a 4m inflatble and 50 hp outboard back to the uk a few years ago

Ref road haulage to UK check air draft, Spain is lower road bridges than France.

I bought a 48 ft boat in Portugal, point of sale Gibraltar for tax reasons, I had no holiday left, it was too high for road transport so shipped it back to UK Las Palmas Majorca also a good place to ship from back to Southampton with SevenStar, Peters and May etc. At the end of the summer.

put all the stuff in a box or a crate, and ship it to the marina where the boat is,...
fly to destination,
if needed rent a car,
has all become very affordable nowaday's

There is a mixture of high rise and luxury canal side villas and everything in between. Bridges restrict access to most properties. I would need a hinged arch to get my 37 footer through.
Most restaurants/bars are consentrated a couple of blocks from the sea and the main marina area but there are half a dozen good supermarkets spaced down the backbone to the main road.
Properties are expensive for Spain comparing them to those I see on programmes like “homes in the sun”
Hope this helps

Thanks, always looking at potential places to have a second home for when I retire. Preferably one where I can keep a boat at the end of the garden. As you say, it does seem expensive for Spain.

Here is the Sant Carles commercial ad - cruise Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza from an affordable marina.

If you don't like the Mallorca prices, Sant Carles might be for you.
Really cheap - and as PeteM says, regular transport - on site boatyard - British community etc......
You might even end up staying here - many have.

As a balance, Cap de Creus video

We found Roses and the Costa Brava a bit too swelly for us - mainly wake from the (literally) thousands of boats exiting Empruiabrava.

Right, due to forum encouragement starting to consider looking for a berth in Mallorca from mid june to mid july. How do I go about this? Found some reasonable priced berths in Marina Mallorca or Muelle de la Lonja. Muelle seems to be a charter port. Any downsides? Not to bothered about the location just as long as the boat is safe until we get there. Our time there would be 10-14 days with the first days getting the boat organised. Once there would be nice if we could marina hop along the coast. No sure how realistic it is to find an overnight berth on a daily basis in the summer?

You might be alright if youre planning to marina hop outside the main school holidays, but i think by staying in marinas every day you're missing out on some great anchorages.

Just email them or phone and ask.

You will pay immediately by card. At this point in the season I would just book if they offer you. The longer you leave it the harder a berth will become to find.

The Palma Marinas are much of a muchness. Club De Mar and Club Nautico have a pool but can be harder to get berths.

I would plan on anchoring out at least half the time.

Getting berths is not an issue per se, but sometimes they say no and you just call the next one. You will not fail to get a berth if you want one. Getting one on Ibiza and Menorca is different as there are only a few marinas, so the odds of being told no rise.

You cannot generally pre book for a night - for a week yes. The exception is Andraxt which allow online booking for berths or Bouys including one night stays.

If you get stuck and need to be on anchor, then Santa Ponsa and Palma Nova are good options.
When Santa Ponsa is uncomfortable then Palma Nova is often ok.
Likewise if Palma Nova is rough, Santa Ponsa is generally OK.
Holding in Santa Ponsa is sand (good) - Palma Nova is mostly weed but much bigger.
Good restaurants in both places.
