Why do they try telling you that berthing in the marinas is free? That the prep stuff is free? Is this just a really stupid way of saying that it's included in the huge entry fee?

.

+1..... I'm always irritated by that kind of statement.. of course its not blöödy free if I've already paid for it.. its like buying a ticket to the theater, Premiership and so in advance then come the day, you'll get in for free.....
Anyway on to the OP, thank you webcraft for posting & sod the grumpy people;)

We even give you a free embroidered shirt for each member of your crew. In
fact, there is so much available, it is likely, many boats will earn their
entry fee back in money they save, before they even start!

That is quite a deal. It will be interesting to see how many boats buy an entry and simply don't go on the voyage.

As was pointed out earlier - I have already posted on this. http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?t=341528

Yes the up front cost is more than the ARC but training in the UK is free and we have arranged discounts with UK chandleries both of which are new. Overall the costs will be comparable. Antigua/Jolly Harbour is not that difficult to get into - I have done it many times and they are really keen to see us (they've even renewed the buoyage into the Jolly harbour entrance!) We know that many can't do the ARC because of the timing and that by going later the weather should be better. If you don't want to do a rally that's fine but many do and we are offering an alternative.

I think it sounds great and when we did our Atlantic crossing, with what was then Blue Water Rallies and Rally Antigua, we made landfall at Jolly.

We had an absolutely brilliant time and then moved round to the Dockyard.

A great experience and one I will never forget.

(Sorry about the Golf Cart Jolly Harbour :D )

Therefore not exactly free, then? It's a service provided to fee paying persons.
Whilst I'm not criticising, I like others do dislike the whole "this is free to people who have paid the fee".

I think you're nitpicking.

I replied to the original thread on this topic and still believe that this represents a good alternative to the ARC. On reading through the entry notes, one thing that does spring to mind is that the rally charges by the boat, not by the person. For me, this could be an issue as we will be 2 up on a 35 ft boat, but paying the same as maybe a boat that is 4up and in the same size bracket. The total cost per person is therefore higher and does seem a little unfair. Just an observation, but maybe something that could be looked at for the future.

Why?

How does - 'at no extra charge' sound then? it is one of the differentiaters between us and 'others'.

It just sounds like marketing speak to me to make it sound like you're getting extra for your money.

How about, "Included in the fee"? It's not extra, it's part of the service you provide for the fee you're asking for.

Are any of the nitpickers actually going to cross the Atlantic anyway? :D

Why would that be an issue? The point raised is that the things being marketed as free, aren't. The organisers aren't arranging it at no cost to themselves, they're paying for it from money raised - the entry fees which all those eligible have paid. It is perfectly correct to say that it is included in the price - but it's not free. This isn't nit-picking, it's disingenuous marketing, and it actually detracts from the offer which might well be a very good deal. However, someone telling me that something I've paid for is free doesn't lead me to want to do business with them...

I'm not going on the rally

Oh

Keep going HB, it takes cojones to do what you have done and what you are now trying to set up.

I think most of the people who would actually really join up and do it, know where you are coming from.

BWR gave us loads of "free" stuff, which of course we knew was included in the fee, but the experience we had has was utterly priceless.
