I am currently insured with Haven Knox Johnston. Although we are predominately marina based, I would like the option to use a swing mooring in Loch Melfort. Haven Knox Johnston only use one underwriter, AS Almin who will only provide cover until the end of August and I would like the option to use this mooring until the end of September. I got a good quote from Admiral Marine who will cover from 1st April till 30th October. Has anyone had any dealings with the company? I understand they are agents for Travellers Insurance Company Limited.

The end of August sounds odd to me. The risks insurers are willing to cover are very location specific - I’ve no idea who might cover loch melfort but the areas I have heard of people getting year round cover have been exceptionally well protected. Otherwise April-Oct seems normal. The logical place to ask is other boats which are kept afloat year round in the loch, but they may be uninsured…

Yes, I agree, end of Sept I thought was normal, but not with MS Amlin. We have asked a neighbouring boat who they use and are waiting the response. We have a mooring there and with our local Marina for sale, want to keep options open. After September we return to the Clyde, so do not need winter cover on the mooring. I agree, many boats may be uninsured.

Had dealings with Travelers as a business/professional indemnity insurer where they are a very big player. I don’t know what they do in this sector, though, I’m afraid.

Have a look at Visicover - I’ve never made a claim so no idea how good then, but I liked the ability to edit and change things in real time and see the impact on the quote. For example, the mooring location, or the minimum experience/qualifications of the skipper etc. their default setting was 1 april to 1 Oct for me on west coast. I needed to delay lift out by a week and they were helpful enough to add that as a one off.

Many thanks, I will have a look.

Travellers is a big US insurer who have been underwriting policies in the UK for many years through significant UK insurers like Admiral. The latter are a major player in both motor and yacht insurance. I had a claim with them for one of my cars which went smoothly. As ever though look at policy wording carefully.

As others have said, mooring location matters. We're not in UK and had been with Amlins fully comp for quite a few years but they suddenly decided to only cover Oct to April 3rd party with no cover for wreck removal or pollution. Now have 12 months fully comp with N & G via Topsail. Only other option I found was Pants but higher premium.

I've been with GJW for years, at first on a mooring at Gourock (Cardwell Bay) and later in a marina. I changed to them because they were cheaper than Navigators but their policy allowed for 7 months afloat (1 April to 31 October) even when I was on the mooring. Although I always left the mooring during September as there were usually gales late in that month.

Pants cover me until 31/10 on a swinging mooring in N Wales. They don't seem too bothered on location (I chopped and changed during renewal) as long as it's professionally maintained.

GJW seam excellent. I’m on a swing mooring April to end October and my premium is low and increased by £3 this year. Oh loch feochan.

I'm insured with Noble Marine, no mooring restrictions, can leave it in all year if I want. Mooring on the Clyde, previously near Oban.
