Navionics webapp is no more...

Yes, the fishing-app seems to be a good alternative. However it doesn't show the distance once you create a route, unless I am doing something wrong ?
Yes it does, it takes a bit of fiddling around, but use the dividers and it will give the distance.

Not ideal, but I guess will have to do for now. I was hoping to find one that would give the route distance the way Navionics used to.

Can the Navionics app not do this on a tablet or similar?

I always assumed the web viewer was very limited - eg it did not have the distance dividers for me, but perhaps that was due to expired subscription whereas could see maps fine.

It had most of the features of the app but could be used on a 30” monitor so was nicer at home.

Their (iPhone, Android etc) gives per leg distance and true bearing. I have emailed the developer to add it to the web version. Will let you know if I hear back.

I’m miffed! Sat down this morning and got redirected to a useless Garmin page!

I found the Web App a very useful planning tool. OK, I never used it for detailed navigation, I have invested a lot of money in Navionics Charts on my plotter over the last 20 years for that, but to be able to sit down with my laptop and to get an overview of my next passages, to do rough distance and timing planning before a trip was a joy.

I know, I’m just one little customer and what company nowadays cares about its customers.

But the App reinforced my loyalty to the Navionics brand and product. When I look to upgrade my chartplotter and nav systems over Winter, I may well still consider Garmin/Navionics products, but all of a sudden it’s a lot easier to look elsewhere.

I too woud do my passage planing on my 27" iMac and then save the route to my account. Using the iPad is OK but you can't beat a 27" screen.

Question now is ‘which is the better alternative or is Navionics still the best charting system’. I felt C-Map have lost their way over the last few years but maybe time to look again???

Oh god, the alternatives are all for the bin. I'd rather use it on my phone than fiddle around with 3 websites to get all the features of the webapp. It was great, you not only got automated routes to start with and distances, you also had full charts accessible.

It was great seeing how far the trip is and even let the webapp calculate how long it would take, it automatically looked for routes that would fit your depth, too.

Another great feature was that it showed you marinas and let you search by name.

I don't understand why garmin would take that out. Bad move.

Just sent this e mail to help@navionics.com

Dear Garmin,
the new Navionics chart viewer, viewed in a browser, is a business mistake that undermines your brand.

Unless I am doing something wrong, you have withdrawn the passage planning functionality from your chartviewer. In its place 1/3 of the page is plastered with aggressive adverts for Garmin pay products. As a paying customer I object to this.

No doubt this is to push users to the pay products such as the Android App or plotter cards. I am a long time purchaser of the app but value the ability to log into a bigger screen to do passage planning. As a paying customer I find it very annoying that this option has been withdrawn.

The impression given is a large corporation has bought out the Navionics business and is now leveraging it for all it can return. However, in withdrawing the passage planning functionality, you remove a valuable route for new customers, and risk alienating existing customers such as myself.

My trust in the brand has been undermined. Removing planning tools for paying customers suggests safety for mariners is a secondary concern. Whilst I will continue to use the App on my phone in the short term, this once passionate advocate is now actively looking at other options.

It would be interesting to hear back from you. Perhaps my worst fears are not to be realised and this update is a temporary step in an improved service to paying customers.

Regards

Stuart Hughes
Paying customer!

Good note Stu. It echos both my situation (as a repeat Navionics Boating App subscriber who valued the integration with the chart viewer / web app) and my reaction to Garmin's behaviour (to start looking for alternatives). It's a particular kick in the teeth given the substantial (14.3%) increase in subscription fees last time round, to then find they hobble their own product like this.

The response I got on Twitter suggested they’re oblivious that they’ve changed anything other than the url. I imagine you’ll get a response with the link to chart viewer.

A Navionics response to a thread in their (US) Facebook page makes it clear they're well aware they've removed the route planning functionality from (what remains of) the chart viewer on the web.

"Terry- Navionics product information, support articles, videos and chart details can now be found on Garmin.com. The new chart viewer offers easy to search chart information, map options, coverage details, recently updated locations and more, for all Navionics and Garmin marine charts in one single tool.
This new chart viewer no longer contains route planning functionality. Any of your saved routes created from our previous tool are stored on your account and accessible to you through your Boating app by simply launching the app or by selecting “sync” in the app menu.
Route planning continues to be available within our Boating app while under an active subscription. From the Boating app, routes, tracks and markers can be shared across your mobile devices, Garmin & 3rd party chartplotters by way of export/import of GPX files as well as other Navionics Boating app users with the app sharing feature. Sync routes and markers directly from your Navionics Boating app to your Plotter Sync compatible unit.
If you are looking to continue using your computer for route planning purposes, you can find more information on compatible PC Planning Software tools in our Compatibility Guide."

[Edit] And then in a subsequent comment . . .

"Terry: Currently this option is not available.
We value customers’ input and can forward this suggestion to our Product Management Team for review and consideration for future enhancements for our Apps. We cannot guarantee any precise date when this may be implemented. Email help@navionics.com with SPK11000 n the subject. Include your suggestion and an agent will gladly assist you."
