As promised yesterday here is a vid of someone operating the swing bridge at Hest Bank on the Lancaster Canal. There is a chain underwater to pull it back again.

There seem to be as many ways of operating swing bridges as there are bridges. From totally automated - just put the key in and press the button - to fully manual like that one.

The manual ones where you have to stop the traffic and move the barriers by hand are the worst, especially on a busy road with impatient drivers.

Long time since I used to walk my German Shepherd on there!-strangely enough my daughter was up there from London today showing her husband round her old haunts.

It's a dead-end at Tewitfield beyond, so he had already done it on the way up.
Interesting bloke who spends about 8 months of the year cruising the canals. Home mooring at Mirfield near Brighouse and Huddersfield.
