Can't speak for anyone elses LR but my current 1996 Discovery has had nothing but servicing since new except a failed viscous fan unit which cost £80. My 1989 90 V8 was used for heavy off-roading at least twice a month for many years and once again never let me down and nothing ever broke. The same goes for the various Series motors I've run over the last 15 years.

By contrast the various company cars I've had such as BMW 325/Honda Accord Type-R/ Merc C class etc, etc have all needed things doing over much shorter time scales.

If you like Targas you must like Land Rovers and vice versa as they are kindred spirits! :)

I recently sold my 110 csw, when I brought it the engine had been changed from a v8 pet to a 3.5 Mazda td OH WOW what a wonderful bit of kit. The gearbox was a Santana !!!!!!!!! and although it had been rebuilt when the new Mazda lump was put in the main shaft still played games.
I did find the gear ratio's did not match and at times felt the engines power was not being utilised to the fullest extent.
I was so lucky re the spec it had there was long range tank under the drivers seat head light washers tinted windows high back seats heavy duty rear springs a kenlow preheat system and even a winch.
The kenlow is a must have as during cold spells the oil slows the cranking speed down !!! even after changing the oil so 15 mins plugged in really made a difference.
The heavy duty springs helped it to cope with hard cornering but of course over rough ground you pay a price.

The gearbox let me down well at the time I thought it did and after trying to find another one plus the huge costs I got hold of a 300 tdi and rs380 box and put it in .
The conversion was easy and I only had to cut the original engine mount off and make a new one further back to allow room for the exhaust down pipe.
I have to say I was not impressed with the 300tdi compared to the Mazda yes the gear ratio's were ok but it didn't take long for problems re timing belt to arise. I sold it but miss it at times certainly compared to the merc van I drive now.

Before that a s111 safari diesel and of course some for spares in between .
OH yes if any one wants some free axles complete with diff's come and collect save me from the pain of advertising em.
I had a massive clear out at the lro show at Peterborough core blimey did I punt some stuff ha ha went home empty.

If any one see's a diesel 110 csw in good order and cheap let me know I might go for it.

Cheers
Mick

Now you're talking! Used to do AWDC events and the Brecons, eventually to many TRO's to make Wales a no-no
Have had several RR / LR's including Rover V8 powered S3.
The ultimate was a 455cid powered LR90 - 420hp of grunt! 0-60 sub 5 seconds! The local hot hatch boys couldn't beleive they were being " stomped" by a muddy LR.
Full exterior roll cage (no elbow room for one inside) 6 ton wreckers international winch powered by 2 humungus truck batteries and a 100amp alternator to charge them.
33X12.50 BF Goodrich mud terrains, Chrysler torqflite auto box with full manual valve body & Hurst dual gate ratchet shifter ( Early RangeRover used this gearbox with an adapter to fit it to Rangey transfer box. Chryslers put that gearbox on the back of B1 440cid engines so plenty strong enough)
I was on the original CSMA 4X4 group setting up off road venues all around the country, by then had also discovered boats so not long before I dropped out of 4X4's. Out of curiosity, any one here ever go on one of these events?? I did use it to tow boat for a while but fuel consumption with 7.5 ltr V8 was, erm, interesting. It then received injected & tweaked Rover V8 with original Santana 'box before I finally sold it..................Happy days

Have got a number of friends with Discos, Freelanders & Range Rovers - all have had a lot of problems over the last five years. One of them was even a LR employee. Can't say I like the Freelander - would prefer a Subaru Forester Turbo. The Disco is showing its age and looks very tippy. Liked the style of the pre BMW Range Rover but think the present one is dreadfully slab sided.
HOWEVER , if the Defender had a turning cirle that was less than the length of a football field I would be tempted. SWMBO (farmers daughter) would like one as well but can't put up with its ungainliness in town.
As an aside, I parked next to a new 530D today. I thought the 7 series looked a bit weird but the 5 must be this centurys ugliest car so far. It is actually Scary !!!
Happy Christmas to all you green welly wearers /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

The Discovery is showing it's age in so far as it's one of the few SUV's you can still buy that can do the business off-road - X5's/VW Toerag etc, etc forget it. Thing is, why buy an off-roader if you don't want off-road ability - as you say, get a scooby-doo and save yourself from looking like a pratt when it never gets muddy! :)

My Defender had better turning circle than my old M3 and a colleagues Ferrari yet it doesn't put me off those vehicles!
