Sorry for the non-boaty post.

I have 2 hobbies in my life, Boats and Landrovers. I currently have 3 of each. Does anyone else share my love of Landrovers?

If so please post which models you own and if you have modified them at all.

Aye, I've run a S3 and use a Range Rover for towing the boat. Do you ever get over to Offroaders Rant?

Don't have a Landy now but used to love them. I was a member of Penning LRC for many years and used to get to some incredible spots on their outings.

I started with a 80 inch 1.6 litre job 1950 vintage. Bought it for £50 and sold it for £40. Also had a couple of Series IIAs

Looked into taking off-road game up again but its not the same nowadays. Make you wear crash hats and seat belts and have Landy scrutineered and must have tax and MOT. Completely ruined by being organised. Besides wouldn't be allowed to do the stuff we used to get away with.

Great fun.

You're not going to like this.
7 or 8 years ago, went to the Bagshot Heath offroad course (it's normally an Army proving ground, and not often open to the public). The routes are graded, like ski runs, and Black are most difficult. Had a brand new 4 week old Jeep Cherokee Ltd SE. 4 litre petrol lump, automatic gear box, road tyres, and unmodified. The marshalls were horrified looking a shiny new metallic paint work, leather and wood interior and road tyres and kept warning me I could damage it.

Got round everywhere no problem, including the section where water was half way up windscreen (took it through with left hand side up on the side so air intake up , but drivers side underwater) except one black run in a section up and down very steep muddy hills in between trees with little clearance (bent body work if any slides) It had been raining heavily...... and there was a queue at one hill.

You drove around a tight bend, down a short but steep drop, and then up the muddy hill about 40 foot high and very steep, so no run up. There was a queue of about 10 vehicles. Sat there for ages as each LandRover, fully equipped with huge off road tyres, front and rear winches, snorkels for water wading etc, failed to get up (and with no where else to go due to all the trees) had to be winched up.

Finally it was my turn. Around the bend, down the drop, backed up a little to line up and get an extra 2 feet run up. All eyes on my brand new road tyred Jeep, as every was out of their cars spectating, and marshalls seemed to have appeared from nowhere to watch. Put my foot down, and up we (had three passengers) went. The guy on top who had been doing all the winching, was roaring encouragement, and huge cheers went up as we passed the halfway mark where everyone else had stalled or run out of steam. Up we went, higher and higher. Right to the top. Guy on the winch was gobsmacked. He'd being winching Land Rovers up since it had got muddy, and couldn't believe we just driven up on road tyres.

He wasn't sure if it was the car or me until I told him it was my first time off road, at which point he nearly fell over.

Still, Land Rovers are not a bad second best /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

I'll now retire and hide, as stories of Jeeps stuck and broken down are swapped! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Finally something I know about!

Had many LR's over the years currently down to one immaculate V8 Discovery on LPG having recently sold a modded V8 90 CSW. Am in the process of buying a TDi Disco for conversion to off-road monster (lift, snorkel, lockers etc, etc).

Have off-roaded for many years also and am getting itchy feet as I build up my new motor.

LOL!

As soon as I saw the word Land Rover in a thread title I knew there would be a post describing how someones bog standard frontera/jeep/shogun/toyota/suzuki had towed out dozens of Land Rovers and never got stuck! :D

Funny thing is, I've been to hundreds of off-road events over the past 15 years and never seen it happen and sadly they never seem to have a video camera with them either! ;-)

It's OK, I got stuck the next year on a wet section where the mud plugger tyres had cut out grooves so deep I grounded on the chassis and had to be pulled out by a Land Rover with knobblies. So much mud on my tyres I couldn't steer going up the next hill and marshalls had to 'lean' on the front end to steer me.

So reputation of Land Rovers saved after all.

They closed that section to vehicles without mud tyres after I got stuck

Used to have a Lada Niva Cossack 4wd. Fantastic off road car. Crap on road car ;-)
Took it off road a few times, mainly at a site in Thamesmead. Think thats gone now though.
Had some hairy moments in that. Never towed any landrovers out though and never got towed out by landrovers even though I only had road tyres. My biggest problem was that in the heat of the moment I would forget to lock the diffs and I'd struggle through to the end only to realize I could have made it much easier for meself ;-)

OffRoaders Rant Page, its a forum for rover owners. Can be a bit "basic" at times but loads of info etc.
My Range Rover is an old classic. Rebuilt the thing more or less from the ground up. It does sterling service as a tug for the boat. Use it on the green lanes a lot seeing as I'm surrounded by them living in surrey.

Done a bit of CCV and RTV trials. Owned a Series 3 SWB for a while before the neccessary upkeep requirements exceeded my engineering abilities and available time. The had two Disco company cars whilst working at LR shortly after Uncle Henry took over. Would drive a Defender now if I didn't do 25k miles p.a.!!

Hi jim yes I to am a landrover nut, also boats and light aircraft, my land rover is a series111 88" 2.25 diesel soft top at the moment, but it came with a hard top as std, "in the garden at the moment" I bought the landrover brand new in early 1975 £2500, I was 22 every body thought I was nuts, sometimes I think they may be correct, anyway had it best part of 28years one of the best things I every did, made lots of friends over the years in connection with my landrover and would never part with it,Lovr it when other owners wave to me, you dont get that with your BMWs or JAGs or VECTRAs or other tin boxs do ya, so easy to fix, parts cheap as you know, do all my own repairs well you have to with a landy dont you, I use the LRO forums all the time, do you use them, dont do much off road now, mainly when I have to launch my boat off the beach.

Regards nick in cheshire

Can't speak for anyone elses LR but my current 1996 Discovery has had nothing but servicing since new except a failed viscous fan unit which cost £80. My 1989 90 V8 was used for heavy off-roading at least twice a month for many years and once again never let me down and nothing ever broke. The same goes for the various Series motors I've run over the last 15 years.

By contrast the various company cars I've had such as BMW 325/Honda Accord Type-R/ Merc C class etc, etc have all needed things doing over much shorter time scales.

If you like Targas you must like Land Rovers and vice versa as they are kindred spirits! :(
